Food Of Love

OH YOUNG LOVE.
I didn't think this film was a great film, but I also didn't think this film was a bad film. I'd probably say it's somewhere in the middle. Generally speaking, it's about an 18 year old music student who gets the opportunity to turn pages at a piano concert for his idol and concert pianist star Richard Kennington. The concert pianist (Richard Kennington) goes on tour and his last stop is Barcelona, where Paul (the young student) is on vacation with his mom. Paul happens upon a program poster advertising a concert that Richard played the day before he arrived in Barcelona. Bummed that he missed it, but excited that Richard is in town, Paul tracks him down. They connect there in Barcelona and things go on from there. The reasons that I thought the film was just ok - is that I felt that Bishops (Paul) performance was a bit stiff, almost like he was really trying to make his acting believable. It's almost like he was trying too hard. Not that I felt it should have been melodramatic, or over the top, I just felt that there was no real emotional range to his character. I felt that the performances from everyone else was ok.A lot of the reviewers on here seem to think that it's about all of these profound lessons. Ok, I guess it could be. I didn't and somewhat still don't think 18, 19, and 20 year olds have the maturity level to handle a relationship with someone of Kenningtons age and caliber ... then I watched -Call Me By Your Name- .. and I started to change in my thinking a bit. BUT. I still think that kind of maturity in a May-December relationship - as in the one in CMBYN is rare. I think in this film, Paul idolized Richard - and yes - he was attracted to him on some level - but I think the main catalyst, if you will, is that Richard was Pauls first. I think there is something special about one's first anything .. but I believe in this film, it lead Paul to make it more than probably what it really was. On Richard's end, I can say and attest to, that it can be bewitching when the young show an interest in older men - but I think a man of Richards age, caliber, level would have to know the limitations, how realistic or unrealistic the longevity of such a relationship would be or is, or the probability of there being a relationship at all. But, these are only my opinions, and this is only a film.

Good, but not the best
I actually liked this film better than I thought I would. Here goes........the main character, Paul, comes across as an innocent schoolboy, but turns out to be sort of a sleep-around. He is self- centered and is not emotional at all. There is one scene when his much older lover catches him sobbing, but no reason is ever given. There is one other scene where he is very nasty to his mother, but then again, he never is very nice to her to begin with. The story twists and turns so often that it practically gave me whiplash, and Paul never strikes me as an overly nice person. With the other characters, at least you can get a feel of their motivation. The one redeeming quality for this film is that the ending is not tragic like most other gay- themed films.Stream it for free on Tubi before spending your money to but it.

Emotional drama and classical artistry
WOW! This is one time I wish I could add a few stars to the rating system. I absolutely love this film. "Food of Love" introduces newcomer Kevin Bishop who gives a riveting, flawless performance as the lead character. The very beautiful Bishop plays the part of Paul, a young aspiring musician trying to achieve his dream of becoming a concert pianist. As Paul gets the chance to meet his idol, pianist Richard Kennington (Paul Rhys), hero worship and attraction lead to infatuation. When he discovers the attraction is mutual, the two share a steamy affair in Barcelona, and Paul falls madly in love for the first time. He is on his way, but his search for real love has only begun. Juliet Stevenson portrays Pauls mother, recently dumped by his dad for another woman. She is a basket case until she sees her son struggling to find himself. Her concern for him helps her deal with her own problems, and the two confront life head-on to discover real love by facing the truth neither have opened their eyes to alone. Both Stevenson and Bishop are very much British actors, with VERY British accents. They portray an American mother and son with absolute clarity, losing the accent and sounding very American. Real professionalism! This had to be a very difficult task to perform. You will understand when you watch the extras on this DVD and see their interviews, where they are very much themselves. Only one time did I notice Bishop pronouncing a word with hint of a british accent. Can you find it? This young man has a bright future ahead of him as an actor if he so decides to continue his career. I look forward to seeing more from him. You certainly won't be offended by his looks, or his body. If you hate classical music, this is probably not the film for you, but if you can muddle through that, the film has a very strong plot. It will hold your interest all the way through if you enjoy films of this nature. "Food of Love" is based on the novel "The Page Turner" by author David Leavitt. Casting and directing are excellent. Acting is superb. As with any film there are a few spots that are less than perfect, but give the production a realism that doesn't in any way seem faked. Great photography, beautifully filmed and good sound quality. I recommend this movie very highly and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Spicy Food
OK, so why isn't Kevin Bishop a huge star. I've never heard of him before this film and bought the dvd in search of a decent gay film. Bishop's performace is letter perfect in his portrayal of a young man's discovery of the power of his sexuality in his own life and in the lives of others. The courage of the filmakers in making a film that is true to the sensuality of attraction and the duplicity of love is wonderful to see. I gave this film 5 stars because it stayed with me for days afterwards. It's nice to see a movie that tells a story with gay characters that has universal themes. Outstanding.
