The Sony HDR-CX440 HD Handycam with 8GB Internal Memory features an Exmor R CMOS sensor and a wide-angle Carl Zeiss zoom lens with 30x optical zoom. The CX-440 captures Full HD 1920 x 1080p60 video and 9.2MP still images to its 8GB of internal memory or to optional media cards. The Exmor R CMOS sensor is designed for increased sensitivity in low-light situations, and the Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Intelligent Active Mode delivers smooth video. Users can monitor and play footage via the 2.7" LCD display with 230K dot resolution. The camera records using the XAVC S codec at up to 50 Mb/s and features dual recording, which lets you simultaneously capture both high-quality AVCHD and web-optimized MP4 files. The Intelligent Auto Mode analyzes your shot and automatically selects the appropriate settings from 10 distinct scene modes, with 60 different possible combinations. The camera features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC capability, and Sony's Multicamera Control takes advantage of the camera's Wi-Fi capability allowing you to simultaneously control start and stop functions on optional cameras from your camera. A built-in USB 2.0 cable provides a connection to your computer for charging or file transfer, and fits conveniently into the hand strap so it's out of the way until needed.

Loaded with menu options and the quality is very good.
I tried one of the cheaper Chinese knock-offs that was about $100 less than this. The quality of those is not very good. I returned it. This is definitely worth the extra money. For the price, it gets five stars. The major difference is this Sony has a Zeiss lens with TRUE optical zoom. Chromatic aberration is minimal. (As opposed to the afore-mentioned cheaper imports) It also has digital zoom once you reach the limits of the optical. Records in the superior file-size-hog XAVC S codec, (which I really don't need for my projects) as well as dual recording in AVCHD and MP4 at the same time. The EXMOR CMOS is several years old technology-wise, but still gives excellent results. Auto focus, auto white balance, but also custom white balance. I do wish it had a microphone input jack, but alas, it does not. Sound quality is good. Also wish it had a threaded front lens to add a lens hood or maybe a polarizing filter, but it is not threaded. The camera is very small and lightweight. I use a small PEDCO UltraPod tripod screwed into it as a handheld grip. Facilitates over-the-head shots with my arm straight up, and view screen pointed down. The user manual is available online that you can download if you want to dive into all this offers. This is NOT high-end broadcast quality, but for the price still gives very acceptable results! All the extras gizmos that come with it are also very welcome. That little LED add-on light is BRIGHT.

Easy to use.....
Bought this camera to take on a trip to Africa. Was very pleased with the results. Camera is easy to use and easy to setup. I was also surprised by the battery life. Video quality for my purpose was very good. Sound quality could be a little better, but it's not bad. Only negative was that there was no instruction manual provided with unit. I had to go to the Sony website and download and print out the manual.

Lots of accessories; camera could be a refurb
Ordered the package and everything came on time. Lots of nifty things in there. Camera itself came in a nondescript white box with a sticker on it that included the camera model number. The "manual" looked to be a photocopy of the getting started instructions that would come with a retail camera. There were no manuals/discs included. I'm sure I can get the software off of Sony's website so just an FYI. Package should say whether this is a retail or OEM or refurb camera so I have reduced the stars accordingly.

Great Camera
The camera was great, but the box containing the accessories and camera was crushed severely. Fortunately, nothing was damaged, but the packaging looked horrible.
