The Art of William Morris in Cross Stitch Hardcover – October 15, 1996

The book provides a brief history on William Morris and his work along with selections of Morris' work turned into charts for stitchers to replicate his work into a form of cross stitches. My only wish is it'd include more work, as most charts are based on simple designs. The only complicated design is the Strawberry Thief. Other classic work, such as Morris' tapestry arts, based on Arthurian legends, has been excluded, which is a major disappointment.

I was disappointed. This is the best there is. The rest of the book is kind of old. Old stuff people dont carry anymore, let alone make a case for it. I dream of a book with real art in it. Tapestry worthy. 😓

This is a lovely book with clear patterns. They do not have the level of complexity I was looking for right now. I’m keeping it because there may well be a use for simpler versions for some things I am thinking of. But there are plenty of what look like very rewarding projects that I think any level of cross stitcher will love.

A beautiful book about William Morris and nice pattern adaptations of some of his work. It includes bird pillows- woodpecker, strawberry thief, and bird. Violets bed linen, the dove and rose picture, medieval jewel collection, evenlode tray and coasters, kelmscott press designs, pimpernel foot stool, pomegranate bowl lids, larkspur table linens, wild tulip tea party, the flower garden collection, tapestry pictures, orange tree bell pull, kennet dresser set and the brer rabbit picture

This is a great book on William Morris cross stitch with beautiful designs. Besides larger projects (you can look inside this book, which will show you what is included), there are many smaller motifs that can be pulled from the larger designs and used in small projects you may want to make. I often pull a flower or leaves or some other small motif from larger designs and make needle books or scissor holders. It's a very nice book; the used copy I received was in great shape.

This book is not a novel!! It is a beautiful book of many of this ARTIST'S creativity as an artist of poetry, painting, and was also a craftsman of fine,elegant furniture. This particular book is about his elegant Cross Stitch designs, with a beautiful introduction, with a lot of history, and then, the wonderful artistry.This book was published by Reader's Digest.

Great book, good patterns.

The book is done exceptionally well and the choices of work are some of my favorites. It is a little difficult to review this book because all of his work is fantastic and the patterns are so easy to follow. Barbara did a wonderful selection and showed a demonstration of good taste.

Das Buch, dessen Vorlagen auf Gemälden, Wandteppichen und Stoffentwürfen von William Morris beruhen, ist voller ziemlich anspruchsvoller Motive, die sich tatsächlich von den üblichen Kreuzstichvorlagen unterscheiden.William Morris lebte von 1834-1896, damit liegt sein hauptsächliches Wirken noch vor dem Jugendstil- trotzdem sind schon die ersten Elemente dieser Kunstrichtung in einigen der Vorlagen zu sehen (z.B. der Pimpernelle)und er gehört auch mit Sicherheit zu den Wegbereitern des Jugendstils.Die Motive zeigen überwiegend Blumen und Vögel, sind innerhalb dieses Themas aber recht vielseitig.Die Farbgestaltung ist schön und nicht zu grell, die Fotos sind aussagekräftig.Manche Motive gefallen mir auch nicht so gut, was aber Geschmackssache ist. Die meisten sind allerdings für meine Begriffe sehr stilvoll.Auch ein schönes Alphabet ist mit enthalten.Fast alle Motivvorlagen sind in Farbe und die Erklärungen ausreichend. Das Buch ist zwar in Englisch, aber beim Kreuzstich erklären sich viele Dinge ja auch von selbst.Die Projekte unterscheiden sich nicht von denen in anderen Büchern: Kissen, Briefbeschwerer, Dosen, Lesezeichen, Bilderrahmen....Ganz hinten gibt es noch ein paar Seiten mit allgemeinen Erklärungen, dem Spannen von Stoffen auf Rahmen und Sticharten. Alles gut bebildert.Für Anfänger würde ich das Buch nicht unbedingt empfehlen, dafür sind viele der Motive einfach zu komplex. Auch Minimalisten dürften sich mit dem Inhalt schwertun, sind die Motive doch (wie im Historismus und Jugendstil üblich) sehr überbordend.Romantiker dürften das Buch lieben. Wer komplexe, teilweise recht große und dabei auch noch geschmackvoll-romantische Motive aus dem 19. Jahrhundert zum Sticken sucht, sollte hier zugreifen!Inhalt:1. This is a book I really love - I have taken it out of the local library many times while planning projects! So when I saw it was available, I jumped at the opportunity to buy it! Wonderful projects, lots of great CS in my future! Yeah!!!Unfortunately, the particular copy I received SMELLS TERRIBLE! It smells like mold and I would never have purchased it if I had known. This is the only reason I have given this item a rating of 4/5. The book itself is a 5/5, but this copy ...

Lovely book. Lovely charts. I will be copying them out of the book as I don’t want to mark them. Had a lovely history side to it too.A must for Morris fans!
