I have one of the 1500 GPH, and, because the suction on it is so high, it tended to suck one of the balls into the intake and cut my flow rate down considerably. I took a piece of PVC pipe just long enough to fit in the base, drilled a bunch of holes in it for water to flow through, then packed about 1 1/2 packages of these in around the PVC pipe. I then took an old Kool-Aid jar cap, drilled a bunch of holes in that, and used it to cover the top. I then put the lid back on the pump, screwed it down tight, vented the air, and it runs great since. I usually take the pump cap off every few weeks to backwash the cotton balls; and, depending on how bad pollen and algae get over the season, I'll take them all out, put in a clean batch, and put the dirty ones through the washer. They filter considerably more out of the water than a standard cartridge filter; but, you'll still need to do your chemical pool maintenance, surface netting, and floor vacuuming. **Q: Help me understand how this works, please. Do you just install the cotton balls where you normally place your paper cartidge or inside something else?** A: Yes just place black filter thingy in over the hole and then add balls! Way better then the paper filter!😊 hope you have a nice swim! **Q: Does anyone know what the black piece is called that comes with these?** A: Not sure of name, just know it has to go into an intex type filter before the balls go in. **Q: does it come with the black filter sponge in the bottom of the picture to prevent the cotton balls being sucked into the pump?** A: You will be pleased to find that it will come with it even though. It "cups" the hole so the ball do not make it past. However you are better off throwing it in the garbage. I used this product for less then 2 days before I decided to throw it all away. Despite your best efforts if you are the type that likes to periodically check on your filter media eventually the balls will find a way past your cap and into your pool hose. If one makes it past you might not notice I had 3 and my water stopped flowing I had to fish them out with needle nose pliers. If you can think of a better alternative to cap off the pool pump hole at the bottom of your filter area these are amazing but what they include didn't work for me ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ These work great - make sure you get enough! *by J***Z on September 21, 2019* These work way more effectively than the standard paper cartridges; however, I will note, you may have to order more than one package to fill up your pump if it is a taller one. I plan on getting 3 or 4 more sets of them so I can swap them out more often and actually wash them each time instead of just back-washing them.One tidbit to make them even more effective, is to get yourself a small section of 1" or 1-1/2" PVC that will just fit in the pump when you put the lid back on, drill some holes all around the top of it, slip it down into the "mouth" of the pump, and fill these balls in around the PVC. Alternatively, you can do like I do and find a fairly tall plastic lid from a Kool-Aid container, drill it full of holes, and put it over a shorter length of PVC to keep the balls from getting sucked into the PVC pipe section. This will improve the surface area for filtering, and greatly increases the time between cleaning these. It also prevents the situation where more powerful pumps suck the mesh filter and part of a ball into the mouth of the pump and lower your flow rate considerably.I almost wish they sold a cartridge made out of these instead of the pleated paper. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ crystal clear *by C***C on April 4, 2024* Purchased to additional filtering capability for my intex filtration system for my cold plunges - makes a difference in the water.
