Homeschoolers Beware. . .
I scoured the internet for reviews before buying this and found nothing. So I will try to give you an idea of what this book is like so you are more informed than I was. This book is set up like every text book I grew up with. The language is overly simplistic in parts, but then some of the new concepts are thrown in with no context. It is a surprisingly short text, but they attempt to cover a lot of ground: a generic chapter on living things and classification, a chapter on protists and fungi, another on viruses and bacteria, and two chapters on plants. The concepts jump around within each section and don't leave you feeling like you understand the life growing in your own backyard let alone the world. In my opinion, this is a sure way to make science the most boring subject ever. I prefer a more practical, hand-on approach to science which makes the vocabulary like "taxonomic keys" memorable because you are using them. The text is obviously designed for a classroom setting, and without the teacher's manual, it would be hard to do the few hands-on activities in the book.It is unclear for what age this book is designed. But definitely not for my first grader. Probably for a fifth or sixth grader, but only if you want to bore them out of their minds. If you are a homeschooler, I do not think this will provide a stimulating basis for learning about science.
