Perfect for lightweight backpacking!
I bought this for my annual week long backpacking trip with my Dad in the Wind River Range. I'm a photographer so I'm already carrying extra gear and bringing my fly rod was annoying. This was perfect for catching brookies in the high lakes and streams and fit nicely next to my tripod. I mostly caught 5-8" fish with it but it did awesome with a fiesty 12" too. It's quick and easy to deploy and casting is only hard in heavy wind. I went with the level line kit which I like better than my Dad's furled line, the only downside is if it gets tangled it makes for some really nasty knots. I'm really happy with this rod and will be taking it on a lot of future hikes and backpacking trips, it's too light and easy not to!Edit: I forgot to mention reach! It worked perfectly in small lakes and streams with 9ft level line and 2ft tippet. You can still work the edges of larger lakes but it doesn't have the reach to get out in the middle for Goldens or bigger fish. That didn't hamper me at all and worked perfect for what it's intended.

Lots of fun
This rod has added joy to my summer. Its easy and fun to use. My eleven-year-old daughter even hooked and landed her own trout with it. It works really well on small streams for fish in the 8-12 inch range, but I have used it on an alpine lake and was able to catch a trout near shore. I am not sure how long the rod will last. After one month of occasional use the bottom cap section snapped off the handle and I had to superglue it back on. But I contacted Dragontail and they sent me a new handle section very quickly. Overall I think its well worth the price, especially with the good customer service.

Very pleased.
Very well made light and packable rod. Finish is very nice. Great value. I was apprehensive about the foam handle but it is very comfortable and dries quickly. Very simple quality rod. Try tenkara you'll love it!

I caught so many little golden trout on this baby!
Very lightweight. I like the foam handle. I take it naked in the side pocket of my backpack- is this foolhardy? maybe. I got the clip on line holder also from dragontail. It's a little bit too big for this model which is a bummer, but it is still functional. I like that line holder much better than the foam line holders that come with this pack because it's much faster to unwind and get fishing. The flies included worked pretty well for me in the kings canyon wilderness.

Missing pieces
Seems like a solid rod. However, it arrived missing the line, flies and foam spool.

What a buy
This rod is fantastic. Lightweight, great action, and barrel of fun. This rod has given me smiles, laughs, and pure joy bringing fish in on it. When I was buying it I thought it was too much to spend on a rod with no reel... but the memories it has brought were worth it all. I thought the lack of a cork grip would be a complain, but then again.. I was surprised. I liked it just the wat it is. If you’re on the fence trying to decide, just grab it. I have zero complaints on this one.

Perfect for Golden Trout
Have had this for a little under a year now. No issues at all in 15-20 uses, mostly in the High Sierra for fish under 2lbs while backpacking. Super fun for catching Goldens. In one weekend I landed over 100 of them. I can see how it could break easy but I have always taken extreme care with it. The tube keeps it very protected for backpacking.
