This 15-hour digitally re-mastered, abridged version of Mahabharat, the epic Indian television series (which originally ran for over 60 hours), is available in a five-disc digi-pack that includes an eight-page booklet containing a glossary of the many characters and an overview of the series by Professor Fitzgerald of the University of Tennessee. Described as "the greatest epic of all time", the Mahabharat television series is based upon the epic verse of the same name written by Rishi Ved Vynasa, an ancient Himalayan mystic, philosopher and thinker. It is a great historic story of sibling rivalry interwoven with Hinduism and the mythological history of India and the most cherished of all Indian classics. It contains complex sub-stories of philosophy, divinity, adventure, bravery and betrayal and is also one of the worlds most significant treatises on karma, reincarnation and yoga. The story is brought graphically, vividly and spectacularly to television by B.R. Chopra, one of Indias most eminent film directors who produced and directed it with Ravi Chopra. For fans of the series, this new DVD release offers an unmissable opportunity to become re-acquainted with the various characters and main story lines. For those yet to experience Mahabharat, the series offers a most exciting, colourful and enlightening introduction to Indian culture, philosophy and mythology.

Mesmerising
The special effects on this series are truly terrible, and the acting is not exactly naturalistic either. But after a while that didn't matter to me because I became gripped by the story. Having now read the Mahabharata in book form (abridged) I'd say that the series does a fine job of telling the same story. I don't feel expert enough to comment any more than that, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and was glad I'd bought it.False Colors: An M/M Romance

Mahabharat the battle between good and evil" and the upliftment of the soul"
Brilliant watch" I remember watching the episodes of Mahabharat in the 80's early 90's I think' and it was great seeing the sections that I missed... A story about the influences of the 5 vices; Greed Attachment Lust Anger and Jealousy! That influences the human thinking! its about doing good and doing evil' and knowing the difference between right and wrong... It shows how we can become influenced into doing wrong... It is with elevated thinking and virtues that we are able to by-pass the negative minefields. The Pandavas manage to conquer five vices by Raja Yoga by their virtue and good fortunes to overcome the stormy passages encountered by being able to navigate with Shiva's (portrayed as krishna) guidance and blessings. Mahabharata is now" and is not really about war" It is at the end of Iron Age that God Shiva the Father of all souls comes as only He is the Creator and the one who can create the Golden Age once more' and grants Krishna is inheritance of birth into Heaven The Golden Age and he becomes Narayan and Radha Luxmi Emperor and Empress of Golden Age" So it is said in the teachings of Raja Yoga by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University.

Unwatchable
We tried very hard to watch this. Having both read and enjoyed an abridged English translation of the Mahabharata, we were really looking forward to watching this. Sadly we were greatly let down. After two hours of watching we could no longer bear the stiff acting, the poor cinematography, the unsynchronised and poor quality subtitling, and the shoddy editing. Such a shame.

Better than 20 vhs tapes
I always wanted this set. Having bought it, the quality and sound is good but a lot has been edited from some scenes, seems like you are fastwarding at times. Apart from that I am satisfied, I haven't yet got to the Gita scene so hopefully nothing has been cut otherwise it will be disapointing.Mahabharat [1988] [DVD]

Good but not brilliant.
For those that watched Mahabharat on TV this is a welcomed edition. The story is portrayed in an excellent manner. I have really enjoyed watching this. The only deterrant is that the picture quality isn't as good as what might be expected for a DVD. But I would buy this anyway!

Conflation of customer reviews
Amazon appears to have mixed up the reviews of customers who have bought this boxed set of 5 DVDs, which provide 15 hours viewing of the best scenes from the original film production of the Mahabharata, with those who bought the boxed set containing 16 DVDs covering the whole of the original production.I have not viewed the latter, which is evidently of poor quality giving rise to the negative reviews here, but can recommend the 5 DVD set without reservation as being of the finest quality and of outstanding merit.

Good but not complete .
The packaging is good, it's not mastered and isn't the full version many important and significant parts are cut out. That's why it only gets 3 stars.
