## Description

desertcart.com : 4 Spineless Prickly Pear Cactus Cuttings - No Thorns or Stickers : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Review: Spineless fo sho - All 4 pads arrived in good condition. I purchased these to feed to my tortoise so I appreciate the quality and the lack of spines. So far my tortoise is loving them and I will purchase again as long as quality remains consistent. Unfortunately I don’t have time to let a pad grow at the rate my tortoise eats them.
Review: Took forever to arrive. All of them rotted - It took so long for this item to ship that by the time the cuttings got to me they were all limp and not fresh. I planted them anyway and they all rotted and would not grow. I grow and sell a lot of succulents and cactus so I know what I’m doing. There was nothing I could do to save these pad cuttings

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how do you get the tiny spines or hairs out? I'm feeding these to my baby tortoises so i want them to be smooth. Thanksss**
A: They don't have full spines but those little bumps (glochids) do have prickles in them that can stick in your skin if you're not careful. Those don't bother tortoises though. I just cut them up and feed exactly as they are.

If you really want the glochids gone you can dig them out or use a vegetable peeler right before you feed. But it's not necessary and there are nutrients in the skin too.

If you want to eat the pads yourself (they are edible) then you want to peel them. Your tortoise might not care but you'd find those glochids quite painful.

**Q: What is the name variety of the cactus? And how hardy is it if I plant them in my zone 6?**
A: There is no way one of this species will tolerate zone 6. The hardiest spinless species will maybe take zone zone 7, but even that is questionable. Opuntia ficus-indica, which includes the typical spineless fruiting and nopales varieties, may die if the temp drops into the mid twenties for several hours.

**Q: I have a coatimundi who needs some prickly pear in his diet. Is there a place that sells the pads in larger quantities?**
A: If you live in an area with a Hispanic market you can often find them there. They are sold as produce. Otherwise you can propagate these pads and grow your own.

**Q: Best time to plant?**
A: I stuck it in a pot immediately after I received it. Also I water mine fairly frequently. I do not drown them as I use a well drained soil mix.
