We bought our house almost 3 years ago and when we moved in, we knew it came with a water softener and we always assumed it was plugged in and working(we didnt know anything about them tbh). Well we started noticing our glass drinking glasses started getting stains on them, the soap wouldnt suds up etc. Finally did a bunch of research and got the water softener up and running. Never had the water tested for hardness level so didnt know where to set the level for so we order this kit and it works perfectly. Nice things is the amount of strips that came with it because now, I can periodically check the hardness level. I like to do it right at the pressure tank, before the softener and at the kitchen sink, the first faucet after the softener, to compare the two results

Seems to work fine. Dip the strip into water for a couple seconds, then hold it horizontally for 30-60 seconds. The color it changes to will be indicative of the level of hardness in your water. I didn't have this independently verified, but the strips do work as described.

They work great, but a bit hard to compare colors. The shades are very close.

I installed a new water softener. The softener came with 2 test strips itself, but I bought these as well. The test strips included with the water softener showed hard water when it was hard (garden hose, not softened), and soft water a day or 2 after the water softener was running. These purchased strips still show hard water even when the included strips show soft water, (and the water feels softened.)

The tester is not working. I tested From different water resourceS from my home. But the color never change. It’s always green. I forgot I bought this after I moved to a new home. I should have used it before my return expires. It’s a waste of money.

I purchased this product to see if my softener was working properly. Tested the well water it was super hard, then tested the faucet water and it was soft... One thing that confused me that it didn't yeild a super soft rating but after further reading that could be due to residual hardness in the system due to age and maybe the fact that I let the brine tank get low on salt a few times. This kit is metric so that is important when your reading about acceptable hardness levels.
