I cannot get mine to print in black and white when any color cartridge is empty. It does NOT automatically print in black only and even when I change the settings, it refuses to print. Once I replaced the color cartridges, it happily printed in black and white again. I've never had a printer do this. **Q: Does it scan?** A: Yes, The Brother MFC-J491DW All-in-One inkjet printer Scans, Prints, Copies and double sided print/copy. The Unit should Fax however I do not the Fax capability installed. awesome little printer. **Q: I only want to print using black ink. Do I need to have all of the colors installed, or can I use black by itself?** A: Install the color as well and just never use it.
