The Wire: Season 2

Still the greatest show of all time
Still the greatest show of all time (even better now that it is in HD). With the advent of the riots in Baltimore, this show has only become more relevant and timely. I really can't say enough about this show, it truly deserves a 100% rating. 10/10 on imdb. The show is definitely NOT for everyone but you can't possibly please everyone when making a TV show... or Movie... or song. No matter what media you chose as your form of expression, there will always be someone who hates it. Haters gonna hate. This show is a true story of life on the crime riddled streets of Baltimore. It was written by people who saw it first hand. And are still seeing it today.Season 2 is a complete switch up and will throw you off at first. Who are these new people? New characters. New Location. Same idea, similar story that will only tie together as the chips fall into place. I think it still takes them just as many episodes to get a wire up and listening in this season...This show requires a class titled "An Introduction to The Wire" because it comes right out of the gate shooting and doesn't let up. A lot of characters get introduced is in the first episode. And they throw the viewer right into the legal process that is our justice system, the Baltimore Police Department and the "kids" living on the streets of Baltimore. Probably one of the most defining characteristics of this show (compared to most Cop Dramas) is how you see BOTH perspectives, Cops AND criminals. You see life from the perspective of the "kids" on the street... and I am using quotes when I say kids for many reasons. A good friend of mine stopped watching the show in Season 4 because it became too heavy emotionally for her. But my point is that The Wire is complex. If you give it a few episodes and actually pay attention, you will not be disappointed. Another tip that some people do... turn on the subtitles. The true language of the streets, cops and whoever is not always easy to understand... even hardcore English linguists will be blown away. Not only will you see life on the streets in Baltimore from the perspective of the cops and the kids on the streets... you will also get a view into the complex lives of the drug addicts, lawyers, politicians, school teachers, dock workers and Judges. Every person just trying to survive the complex institutions they have become a part of... family was the most complex and heart breaking system on this show.So go ahead and compare this show to other cop dramas but IMO it does not compare at all. The only TV show that can compare to The Wire in quality, social message, complexity and re-watch-ability is the Twilight Zone.

Down In the Hole
I just watched The Wire for the first time, and, for my opinion, I'd like to combine seasons 1 and 2. Yes, I see the intelligence and complexity in the drama that centers around a culture of people "down in the hole" of a big city, but I want to bring out that some of "us" have worked all our lives trying to overcome this very depiction. That's because much of what society knows comes from what they see on TV. They only have their original thoughts confirmed by this depiction. (Where have The Huxtables" gone?) I, and a whole lot of people like me, know nobody who converses in that language, or kills people, or even sells drugs.Yet, I give this drama 5 stars. That's because the story of the street life in season 1 is so well- written, it just pulls you right in like a Grisham novel. Can't put it down. It's something you've never seen, like life on another planet (Star Trek). And you can't forget it...you are influenced by it. I noticed I began to see some of that language beginning to creep into my own speech as I talked with my sister. Scary! Simon's "Homicide: Life on the Street" was nothing like this. I was around then and saw it first hand. Of course, both shows were "real" and the characters were memorable, but they were so different.I've viewed both seasons 3 and 4 also, and noticed that things that were happening in season 1 were still developing in the ensuing seasons. Main characters I really liked (no spoiler alert) In season1 keep appearing, almost disappearing, REALLY disappearing, etc. I love the compassion in D'Angelo, as well as the style of Detective McNulty. And who was smarter and cagier than Stringer? I loved him. I also believe Greggs was apowerful image for women.I gave seasons 1 and 2 five stars even though season 2 was less interesting to me. It was cool as we moved from the streets to the water. Yet we still had the murders, but on a much larger scale (14 girls discovered dead "in a can"). No, no more young black kids standing on street corners pushing drugs, but ships coming in from all over the world carrying contraband...some human. Whites work on a much larger scale,it seems, but they're hunted down like the blacks here in season 2.Putting 1 and 2 together, the drug trade" in the hole" and the dock workers on the water, were just as political...immoral, corrupt, and money- driven as the political spectrum above ground. We really see that in seasons 3 and 4. And did I say, I preferred the intro music to season 1?

'EXACTLY AS IT SAID ON THE TIN'
Old drama series but new to it. Great value for money and excellent copy, despite being second hand. Very prompt delivery. Faultless customer service. Thank you.
