Q: Do you need a speed controller for this, or can it just be a simple on off switch?

On off is best. A normal 600 watt light dimmer will burn up. I tried it. You will need a special speed controller just for motors. The fan is very loud so a speed control is good for quieting the sound if you don't need full blast all the time like for a stove vent.
