Great as an early warning bat alert
Great as an early warning bat alert: when we sit out on our deck we keep an eye out for our little brown bats at dusk. The Batseeker lets us know that one is near and we watch for it/them against the evening sky. Often there is more than one - you can hear the difference in the audio the unit provides. I've also used it in other areas (indoor and outdoor) to get an indication of an ultrasonic environment. Electronic gear often emits ultrasonic sounds. Some insects as well. Search for ghosts or whatever. I've inquired about being able to subdivide the input frequency in multiples of 2 (octave relationships). I'm told that an App is being developed that can do this - along with other nice features (another unit soon).

Are your pet rats talking to each other about you?
We're using this to listen to our two pet rats. It seems to work quite well--it emits squeaks that sound very natural when it's within a couple feet of a rat that is (apparently) squeaking. These two particular rats aren't all that squeaky--it's not like there's suddenly a river of squeaks when you turn the device on. (We've had other rats that were much squeakier within the range we could hear unassisted.) So it is a minor disappointment on that front--but in terms of the gadget doing what it claims to do, I'm impressed!

Works well for bats, unfortunately it doesnt work well for our pet rats.

It works!
Highly sensitive, picks up the ultrasonic calls, though would say that environment has a great deal to do with signal pickup and range. This can easily be tested with a dog whistle. We have bats in our night sky - we can't see them but now we can hear them.

Did not hear my rats
I bought this to listen to my rats. I did not hear anything that sounded like animal sounds. After turning it on, I heard periodic "psk, psk, psk", that never changed much. Maybe rats were just quiet?

The added volume control is excellent allowing me to use this to do sound recording ...
I use this when I do a bat interpretation at a local bridge. It really brings the experience alive for the kids. The added volume control is excellent allowing me to use this to do sound recording for demonstration. Well worth the cost.

Works great!
Works great. Haven't taken it out in the field yet--too cold--but I did test it with an ultrasonic rangefinder. Picked up the pings loud and clear from across my living room. Simple to use.
