Nicely presented book.
An amazing book that I only wish I had written/photographed myself! As somebody who is fascinated with all aspects of Japan, I also find this subject area interesting. The author/photographer has been extremely privileged to get behind the scenes of a such a protected industry in Japan. It's not graphic at all, but it's also not a book you'd want to leave out when people come to visit!Great quotes and cool photographs. Nicely presented in a pink plastic cover, too. :)

not a book- pornography more so than anything else
Prostitution is seriosly screwed up in Japan- handjobs, oral and anal saxx is legal at a sex club , but actual penetration isn't, messed up huh? well, you can read all about it in this book through... pictures? O_o yes, I bought this thinking it was a deatailed account on the Japanese sex industry (I hadn't bought a BOOK in many years, so I was kinda looking forward to sitting down to read it... however, text only accounts for about 28% of the content- the rest are glossy photos the author has taken of sex clubs in Japan (which are anti-foreigner according to her)... through it the author communicates basic facts in Japan- e.g. sex is the 2nd biggest industry in Japan next to cars apparently, and foreigners are feared in the sex department in Japane because the Japanese believe they harbor STD's... had aI known it was mostly pictures I wouldn't have bought it though.

Great testament to research, documentary and artistic non-prudishness
Firstly as a collectors item this book is great. Joan Sinclair does a great does a great job of presenting the information and images with dignity as well as conveying sense of fun within the subject matter, it is refreshing to have a woman photographers take on sex industry photography with an honest and human approach. With excellently documentary quality this book doesn't revert at any point to being seedy or cheaply pornographic, in fact there aren't any images graphically showing intercourse at all. (not to say that it would necessarily compromise the artists vision, but it was clearly a conscious decision by Sinclair, and I doubt from reading the text that this done out of prudishness)The photographs have fantastic colour - very bright or even neon, except with a slightly dulled hue that captures the ambient light from fluorescent lamps; none of the images look fresh, peaceful or daylit (obviously) you're in a big city in the depths of strangely commercialized sexual world. This book features a gorgeous, tacky fluorescent pink transparent plastic dust jacket (It's that kind of plastic that's a bit rubbery, but just the right amount of shiny - like a kitsch pvc costume from a sex shop)To anyone thinking this book has a theme of "the Japanese are weird" - Please have an open mind, you might learn or enjoy something - I would also recommend this book on shunga http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shunga-Sex-Pleasure-Japanese-Art/dp/0714124761/ref=pd_ys_iyr1 - it is very interesting to compare historical and traditional sex industry and artistic imagery with the contemporary. Perhaps also branch out into erotic manga.

Absolutely Brilliant!
This is one of the most amazing journeys that a photographer has ever ventured upon. Joan Sinclair is a lawyer from the United States, but she is also a seeker, an artist, and so much more. Her dedication, cultural finesse, journalistic intensity, and photographic skills are simply astounding. She has accomplished the impossible here by venturing into the sexual "underground" of Japan - a world where foreigners are rarely, if ever, allowed entry. Over the course of a year she finagled her way into over 80 different sex clubs where she got to know the workers intimately (as a photographer). The massive amount of work she created and presents here is mind-blowing, and depicts a fantasy world where every sexual desire is not only catered to, but is actually embraced.Sinclair's photography is riveting, personal, and crafted with the eye of a seasoned photojournalist. She has captured a most moving and exhilarating world that very few will ever come to know. This is truly a brilliant accomplishment and a must-have book for all collectors.
