The jet-powered, subsonic B-52 Strategic Bomber was developed for the United States Air Force for the purpose of carrying nuclear weapons, though only conventional bombs have actually been used. The Stratofortress entered service in 1952 and since then has played an important role in a variety of conflicts, serving in the Vietnam War, both Gulf Wars, and Afghanistan. Over 700 have been built, and the B-52 remains in service to the present day.
