Review: blah - Blah Blah... what can I say? Nothing ever turns out as well as they advertise. It would be nice if they gave all the full details before purchasing it such as WHICH games exactly it is for.
Review: Works just fine with my fat PS2 - Works just fine with my fat PS2. Was a necessity now that the servers for all the PS2 online games have long since died and so much functionality is dead. Really lets you get the most out of games that just can't be finished due to the time that has passed.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The PS2 Action Replay Max delivers if you know what you're looking for
*by J***N on August 24, 2012*

I bought a Playstation 2 Action Replay Max Evo edition because of the "Max Media Player" feature, but with Action Replays, it's hard to tell whether they come with that feature or not. Turns out, only a few versions include this feature. A way to tell is if they come bundled with a *16* MB flash drive, not the *128* MB flash drive shown in the picture for this product listing. The 16 MB flash drive looks like this: [...] In addition, the home screen of the Action Replay Max will show the Max Media Player icon if it is included. Otherwise, you'll just have to make do without that option, although it isn't too much of a letdown considering that you can still do a lot with the Action Replay Max, including using it to help you get a media player for the PS2. Regardless of my slight initial disappointment, I found out that it would suit my needs nicely. I wanted the Action Replay in order to legally soft-modify my PS2 so that I could use it to playback movies on my portable USB hard drive. I had to use a method without the Max Media Player feature that involved a Playstation and a memory card save, but that's a different story. Now, onto what really matters: the product. The Action Replay is useful for games that seem to be a bit boring or repetitive after awhile. You'd be surprised how much the replay value of games goes up after you are able to unlock content and abilities that weren't meant to be or were meant to take pain-staking amounts of tedious labor that can make a game more of a chore. I am all for finishing things fair-and-square- I always complete the game before ruining it by "cheating", but "cheating" is fun after you have done much hard work. The code system works as well as expected and is pretty simple. Head over to "Expert Mode" on the main menu and the built-in codelist will appear. If you have a PS2 network adapter connected, it will even ask if you want to update your database, but I have not tried it myself as I am not sure that the network adapter works with a WPA internet connection (the network adapter can be used to connect a hardrive to the PS2, which is required for a few games). You select your game from the menu or add a new one, which is easy enough. Maybe with a keyboard it would be even easier, but the code input is a vast improvement over the old Gameshark for the Playstation that I was used to, in which you had to change a value by scrolling until your Hex-digit came up. With the Action Replay, all of the values (numbers and letters) are in a handy table and easily accessible. The "Max Memory" option on the main menu is a very useful item. It lets you manage your saves and even transfer to/from a USB flash drive. If you are short on space, you can even transfer to a flash drive and have them compressed to take up even less space, but you'll need to uncompress them to use them in-game. You can "Get saves" by clicking the option in the Max Memory menu, but you'll need an internet connection if you want to expand the listing from the ones pre-loaded on the CD, which may be a bit lacking if the Action Replay is older than your game. Other options available are to create an account (have not tried or verified that it worked) and general settings (including sound and internet settings). If you press "Start", it will let you start a game, return to the main menu, or stay on the Max Memory menu. Although the Action Replay Max can be used to play DVDs from other regions on the PS2 as long as they are NTSC and not PAL format, I have not used it personally as I do not have any DVD movies that are from other regions. The main settings menu is virtually the same as the settings menu that is found on the Max Memory's menu, just without an ID number that is shown on the Max Memory version of the settings menu. That about wraps it up for this product. The usefulness you will get from this product depends from the use you want to get from it. If you want a tool that will allow you to potentially expand your PS2's capabilities by allowing third-party programs to be installed, a code manager, a save manager, and a region-free NTSC DVD player, then you will be satisfied with your purchase. If, however, you want it solely for the media player, then you are taking a chance, since there are few available and many different versions that do not come with the Max Media Player, although if you search around, you can read how the Action Replay Max itself can be used to installing other programs. Overall, it is a good value if you play a lot of PS2 games, but if you are just a casual gamer, there shouldn't really be a need for one. In the end, the choice is up to you. Best of luck finding what you need!
