## Description

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." So begins Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's perfect comedy of manners--one of the most popular novels of all time--that features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. "Pride and Prejudice seems as vital today as ever, " writes Anna Quindlen in her introduction to this Modern Library edition. "It is a pure joy to read." Eudora Welty agrees: "The gaiety is unextinguished, the irony has kept its bite, the reasoning is still sweet, the sparkle undiminished. [It is] irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be." This volume is the companion to the BBC television series, a lavish production aired on the Arts and Entertainment Network. The Modern Library has played a significant role in American cultural life for the better part of a century. The series was founded in 1917 by the publishers Boni and Liveright and eight years later acquired by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. It provided the foun-dation for their next publishing venture, Random House. The Modern Library has been a staple of the American book trade, providing readers with affordable hard-bound editions of important works of liter-ature and thought. For the Modern Library's seventy-fifth anniversary, Random House redesigned the series, restoring as its emblem the running torchbearer created by Lucian Bernhard in 1925 and refurbishing jackets, bindings, and type, as well as inau-gurating a new program of selecting titles. The ModernLibrary continues to provide the world's best books, at the best prices.

Review: Pride and Prejudice is a must read! Great Price! Buy it today!! - Wonderful Read! Wonderful Price! Love Wordsworth Classics!
Review: Pride, Prejudice… and a Bit of Miscommunication - I first read Pride and Prejudice years ago in Spanish when I was in school — my first language is Spanish — and I loved it. Over the years, I’ve watched many of the TV adaptations and movies based on it, and I enjoy them all. This time, I decided to read it in its original English version, and I have to admit it was a bit challenging at first. The language felt formal and old-fashioned, but once I truly dove into the story, I found myself completely into it and really enjoyed it. For years, I always thought Mr. Darcy represented pride and Elizabeth Bennet represented prejudice. But reading it again after so long, I actually think it’s the other way around. Darcy was prejudiced against country people, so he didn’t expect to feel attracted to someone like Elizabeth. And Elizabeth, on the other hand, was hurt and proud after overhearing him say she wasn’t “handsome enough to tempt” him. I don’t think Darcy was truly proud — more like introverted or socially awkward. He didn’t feel comfortable surrounded by strangers in noisy social settings and didn’t see the point of making small talk with people he’d probably never see again. He assumed his best friend wouldn’t stay long in the area, so he didn’t bother much with the locals. Elizabeth, meanwhile, was offended by his comment and immediately disliked him. When Wickham later told her those lies about Darcy, she believed him right away because she already had a negative opinion of Darcy and Wickham was charming enough to feed her ego. In the end, all the misunderstandings came from an introverted man trying to avoid unnecessary conversations and a woman who thought too highly of herself while pretending to be humble, someone used to putting herself down just enough so others would lift her up again. Even though this might sound like a critical take, I honestly loved the book. The characters feel real and complex, and reading it again (this time in English) gave me a fresh perspective on a story I thought I already knew.
