Shot: 2018 World Cup Chaser: This Book
I was looking forward to watching the 2018 World Cup, and it has been beyond anything I had hoped for, even though the U.S. didn't qualify. I started this book before the tournament started, and it has been fascinating to read while the tournament progresses. I've been rooting for chaos and cheering for the underdogs, thus raising the question about what the USMNT can do, not just to qualify, but to win the World Cup. West does a great job trying to corral such a complicated situation and laying out a plan for the USSF and USMNT to develop to succeed on a global level. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're interested in the history of the men's national team and have your own opinions about how they should move forward.

Very good book. A summary of the last 30 years of USA soccer history. Great details on the progression of the team and the academies that have spurned the MLS. Player development history...

Great Optimistic Look at US Soccer
I got this book after reading a New York Times article about it. I had previously read West’s other book so I knew what I was in for. Books like these are great and will be a great reread in a decade to see how things have panned out since then.

Best of Wikipedia
Nothing new in the book yet the author speaks as if he is the one with all of the knowledge and answers. No interesting insights or anything you haven't seen before.

Afraid to go after the real issues
Author doesn’t seem to have a soccer background and isn’t connected to the real issues at all...

You might not want to qualify to buy this...
I picked up a copy of this book whilst browsing and found it to be poorly constructed as well as difficult read. Honestly my time would have been better spent in setting this immediately back on the shelf. With "11 color photographs", it is a trite example of the author's hubris that he "has the answer". It's unclear to me if this is simply a presumption of the author that he should be a writer, or an indictment of the low bar to obtain a degree from San Antonio. When looking for a true soccer writer, stick to Grant Wahl.
