This 16 track CD contains Funkadelic's Westbound singles from 1969-76, including their first significant single "I Bet You," co-written by George Clinton while under contract to Motown for five fruitless years (Motown never released it or any other Parliament song). Guitars dominate every track, either as lead instruments or as electric wallpaper; Bernie Worrell's keyboard and synthesizer skills glue everything together.

Fine group but not the best choices
I love Funkadelic both back in the day and buying them to complete my R&B collection from way back. George Clinton recorded first for Westbound (where this collection came from) and Priority. The Westbound work is, in my opinion, edgier and more rocked out."Maggot Brain (Live)" is a good choice, but why cut the live version off? There's still maybe 9 minutes left on this CD and the live version ran to about 10 minutes on the original vinyl."Funky Dollar Bill" is the singles version. I had the LP back in the day and the LP version didn't sound so distorted. Again, there was enough room for the LP version, so why not actually put the finest up there for us to hear? There was room for it.Of course, my two favorites: "Get off your @ and Jam" and "Undisco Kidd" are here, plus some tunes I've never heard before. Overall, a great find--just not the finest versions of a couple of songs I really liked.Rebecca Kyle, May 2008

One of the best starting places for Funkadelic's music!!!
George Clinton and Funkadelic were a lot different band when they recorded with Westbound Records. Their music was much more psychadelic and experimental. It was also more guitar driven and it was when Funkadelic was recording with Westbound Records that they captured Eddie Hazel's best work. This CD is a compilation of the most popular songs that Funkadelic recorded while they were with Westbound records. The best part is that it provides the full tracks of classics like I Got A Thing..., I Want To Know If It's Good To You, Cosmic Slop, Red Hot Mama, Standing On The Verge..., Get Off Your A** & Jam and Undisco Kid. The one exception, and the only downside to this CD, is Maggot Brain. Instead of the full version of Maggot Brain, it provides a live version that feels cut. Still, this CD is definitely worth buying and it deserves five stars for it's compilation of Funkadelic's other great Westbound era recordings. It's not necessarily a substitute for the other Westbound era CD's but it is certainly the best starting place. The best starting place for Funkadelic's music after they left Westbound Records is One Nation Under A Groove.

Essential funk-rock
The best single-disc sampler of Funkadelic, the world's funkiest rock band or rockingest funk band. Because this collection includes both the choicest late 1960s hits (in their album-length versions!) and early-t-mid 1970s LP favorites, this presents a more comprehensive view of the band than the other compilations available (the 2-CD singles anthology is a definite five-star recommendation to those looking a little deeper). A great document of the underappreciated Eddie Hazel's amazing guitar pyrotechnics, too. Great booklet art (no notes, though, just CD covers), too.

Great mix of funked up tunes
I picked this album up used for $7.99, and I would have been glad to pay full price for a new copy. It contains some of the best tracks from the funkiest albums in history. I own several of them, but I still bought this one! I can't really say what my favorite track is, but Loose Booty, Cosmic Slop, Hit it and Quit it, and a live version of Maggot Brain make it well worth the price.
