A great diagnostic tool for any toolbox
Update: I’ve been able to use this scanner a bit now and it has impressed me quite a bit. The screen is clear and bright, touch controls are responsive and navigating menus is a breeze.Outside of Amazon sending me a used and returned unit it has performed flawlessly. It pulls up codes pretty quickly, though it takes a bit to scan through the different modules, and the live data is butter smooth and updates very quickly. This scanner easily rivals my old Snap-On scanner, the Solus Pro, which cost thousands of dollars when I bought it about 10 years ago.So why buy this scanner if I have a pro grade scanner? Pretty simple: rechargeable battery, smaller and more compact size, and free updates!Honestly, I’m very satisfied with this scanner. It’s updated twice in the past week and they haven’t cost me a dime. Good luck getting that kind of service with something like my Solus Pro. Those updates still cost hundreds of dollars.Another reason I like this scanner? Customer service. An XTOOL rep saw my initial review and reached out to me about it. We have gone back and forth a bit in the past week and they are going to try to make it right even though it was a failing on Amazons part. Where are you getting this kind of service anywhere else?As a former career mechanic, I highly recommend this scanner or any of their other scanners. You should also know that this scanner will recharge off of the vehicles OBD2 port while it’s plugged in, so you don’t have to worry about the battery dying as you’re diagnosing the vehicle or having an extra charging cable running to the scanner. That’s fantastic for viewing live data as someone else drives the vehicle.Initial review: I received a previously used scanner. It was registered to Herman, though he was probably not the Munster. I also have their WiFi network information and everything else they put into this scanner. I’m not sure why they returned it after using it on 2-28-25 on an Infiniti, but they did. While I am marking this review at 3 stars, I understand that it is unlikely an issue with the seller.I did delete the previous user and then updated the scanner, it took a while since it needed a system update and 41 module updates, but it went pretty quickly. You should know that in the “update” menu there is an update all button, but it is only labeled “updates”. I had started to update them individually before I pressed it, not knowing what it would do. Did you expect me to read the instructions?I’m not sure if I should return this or just complain to Amazon or the seller, see what they know about this, but I do need a scanner and so far this is pretty quick to navigate the different menus and should perform well.So far I haven’t used it, but I will at least give it a shot before I do anything else. It does seem well made.

Great product! Saved me a tow. Can access EPS system.
Needed a bidirectional scanner that could access my starting angle sensor and this worked so well! My 2010 Hyundai Elantra’s electronic power steering (EPS) light came on after being parked for a few days and completely shut down my power steering making the car undriveable. After researching I saw a YouTuber reset the steering angle sensor with the XTOOL 7 but looked like I could do it with the base model XTOOL 5 and I was right! This saved me a tow and a probably a lot of money. Keeping it in my car for the future, fingers crossed the EPS light hasn’t come back on after about 2 weeks now. Interface is great and seems really well made. Super worth it even if you’re a simple DIY mechanic for your own vehicle.

Buy it, you won't regret it!
incredibly pleased with both the scanner and the customer service I received after purchase. I bought the scanner to help me diagnose a fuel issue in a 2014 kia rio. The live data graphs saved me hours of troubleshooting and diagnostics, and all of the special features are very useful. When I originally received the scanner, I booted it up and got an error code when trying to make my account, I contacted customer service, and within a few hours they replied letting me know they fixed the issue and offered a free carrying case as an apology for my issues with the scanner!! I've been showing off this scanner to all my friends and have been looking for excuses to use it. you can even email yourself diagnostic reports! For the price you can't go wrong!! Thank you Xtool, you guys rock!

CPS relearn incompatible with Nissan
It is terribly slow. I got it in the mail and it had 111 needed updates before I could use it. After the updates it told me that the relearn for CPS was incompatible with my vehicle. Waste of my time.

Small and easy to use. Lots of features
If you’re on the hunt for a diagnostic scanner that’s reliable, fast, and easy to use, the XTOOL D5S is definitely worth a look. It’s designed for DIYers and mechanics alike, delivering a great balance of features and affordability.First Impressions: User-Friendly and SleekRight out of the box, the XTOOL D5S impresses with a 5.45-inch touchscreen that’s clear and responsive. The design is modern and functional, with an interface that’s intuitive and simple. Even if you’re not a tech wizard, you’ll find it easy to get started. The D5S runs on Linux, which makes navigation a breeze. It boots up quickly and runs smoothly, giving you quick access to all its features without the usual clunky interface you see on many budget scanners.Powerful Diagnostics for a Wide Range of VehiclesOne of the biggest strengths of the XTOOL D5S is its coverage across more than 80 car brands from Asia, Europe, and the U.S. This scanner doesn’t just cover basic engine codes; it’s equipped to scan ABS, SRS, transmission, battery health, and more. Whether you’re dealing with a check engine light or digging into system-specific issues, this scanner gives you all the data you need.Plus, it offers live data streams—perfect for troubleshooting issues as they happen. It even lets you graph this data, which is especially helpful for spotting patterns over time. You can easily analyze issues like fuel trims or air/fuel ratios, making this a go-to tool for in-depth diagnostics.Advanced Features: Extra Power for Detailed DiagnosticsThe D5S stands out with some impressive advanced features. For example, it has bidirectional control, which means you can test individual components like fuel pumps or radiator fans directly from the scanner. This level of functionality is usually reserved for higher-end models, making it a great addition for a scanner at this price point.Another handy feature is the DTC Lookup function. When the scanner throws a code, it provides a quick description instead of just a confusing string of letters and numbers. It’s a small but valuable touch that can save time, especially if you’re diving into diagnostics without the need for endless Google searches.Convenient Connectivity and UpdatesOne thing that’s genuinely user-friendly about the D5S is its Wi-Fi capability. You can connect it to Wi-Fi for updates, so there’s no need to deal with cables or plugging into a computer. The updates are also free for life and it comes with a 2 year warranty, which is a big bonus in this space. Staying up to date is essential, as it keeps you ready for newer vehicle models and technology changes, so this feature adds solid value over time.Final Thoughts: A Great Value Scanner for Pros and DIYers AlikeIn short, the XTOOL D5S is a high-value diagnostic tool that brings plenty to the table. With its versatility, quick response times, and advanced features, it’s perfect for both amateur DIYers and professional mechanics who want a scanner that’s both easy to use and packed with useful features. For its price range, the D5S really shines, offering quality diagnostics without requiring a big investment. If you’re looking for a scanner that’s efficient, reliable, and packed with functionality, the XTOOL D5S is a fantastic choice that’s sure to make vehicle maintenance a whole lot smoother.
