This unit will actually do a GM crank position sensor relearn unlike others that say they will but won't. It also does a pile of other useful things like cycling ABS actuators and adjusting for tire size variations. Plus about another 30 odd functions. Given the sheer number of different vehicles and all of their sub-routines, I've barely scratched the surface of its capabilities but definitely a useful functional piece of equipment. About 10 minutes to set up out of the box and very intuitive to use. As a former professional mechanic, this is on the very high end for home use and very impressive for what it cost.

Being my neighborhood mechanic has required me to work on a variety of makes and models. This diagnostic scan tool has yet to let me down in its year of weekly use, for the price and its capabilities, its very hard deal to beat.

What attracted me to try this scanner out was the price and free 3 year subscription. I bought this scanner and ordered a key fob for my 2027 Honda Ridgeline to test it as soon as I received it and so far it’s worked great. It was quick and easy to program the new key fob, so far I’m really impressed with how it’s performed.

I am satisfied with this tool. I have used it a couple of times. As for what i read it does not support Ford PATS programming for keys and such. Hope this will be added with a software update soon.

Very convenient and a little confusing at first but it’s easy to catch on fast when you sit down and mess with it for a bit. The special functions aren’t available for every vehicle which is a little annoying, I need airbags reset on my 2017 Chevy Silverado and I can’t but I’m hoping there will be an update soon. It’s nice how you get free updates too.

Been using this tool for a while now. Functionality and vehicle compatibility is great. It’s done everything I e asked of it and has become my go to scan tool.

This a great introductory Bi-Directional Diagnostic Scanner. I use this thing everyday. Whether I'm doing a diagnostic scan and looking at live data to resetting a maintenance service reminders. It small enough to not be cumbersome when moving around the shop to different vehicles and doesn't take up as much box top space. The screen is very easy to read and for those vehicles with lots of systems in the topology you can zoom in and out. VCI connects quickly to the tablet once plugged into the vehicle. You can save scan reports and then either print them out via Wi-Fi or even email them direct from the device. You can also customize the report with a company logo if you have one and your contact information. I have had this thing for almost a year at this point and have not regretted the purchase since. There have been daily updates to the various vehicles and functions in the last few months and they are constantly making improvements to the device.

Right off the bat, let's address the elephant in the room. Gearwrench DOES NOT make a scan tool! This is unofficially a rebranded XTool in the form factor of the 7" D7W with the improved functions of the 8" D8W. How do I know? I own an xTool D8W and it is exactly the same interface and feature wise. The retail box the Gear Wrench scanner comes in boasts "Break Free from Software Fees" but after 3 years, you will have just that - software fees! $150 a year to be exact. To put that into perspective and in comparison to the aforementioned XTool models, the D7W also gives you 3 years of free updates and then it's $100 a year thereafter. The D8W, which also comes with 3 years of free updates, will set you back $200 a year thereafter. So, it’s no surprise the Gearwrench scanner which shares the size of the D7W and functions of the D8W falls between the two in annual subscription costs. Now mind you, these are all generally considered reasonable annual subscriptions fees in comparison to many other scan tools charging you 2-3x more, but it's still something to consider for long term ownership and functionality. Battery life is terrible! You'll easily drain 25-30% working on one vehicle, with very basic usage. If you let it sit in standby mode, it won't even last a day. If you plan on using this scan tool for lite duty use, then it'll be sufficient. The user interface is simple, which is not a bad thing, but it leaves a lot to be desired. There were a handful of spelling mistakes like Salibration instead of Calibration within the menus and functions, but these are often common with “Chinese made” scan tools and I wouldn’t call them deal breakers. The tool itself was relatively fast when used, but the start-up sequence with animation is unnecessarily too long. The auto scan feature is hit or miss, and VCI connection stability is somewhat temperamental. I found the overall feel and design of the scanner to be good but definitely not heavy duty. The hard plastic case it comes with is a plus, and a well-received upgrade over traditional soft case. Setup is easy, and yes just like most all other subscription-based scanners, you will have to create an account. I know some users feel that it is a little too intrusive to use a tool, but that is the norm. At its full retail price of $700, this is a hard pass. You would be better off getting the D8W with the larger screen, and bigger battery which regularly sells for at or below $550. This scanner only becomes somewhat a "deal" if you can score one at or below the $400 mark, which it does go for at times. Then and only then would I look past its shortfalls and see its potential value. Do your due diligence before pulling the trigger on this one. It may leave you wanting more than it can offer,
