Gaga at her very best
My new favourite song at the moment Lady Gaga singing Happy Mistake from her new cd release Harlequin. I received the cd yesterday it mainly songs from the new Joker film but this isn't the soundtrack where she is playing a role of the deranged Lee Quinn when she is singing in the voice she chose for the character. This is Lady Gaga at her very best a stunning album of great songs and excellently produced ,I haven't stopped playing it all day .The other stand out track on the new album for me is The Joker 🃏

Great...
...further evidence that the girl can sing, as evidenced on "Folie A Deux" and further that she could do a 'big band' type album.

Sensational takes on classics
All the old stars from Garland to Sinatra, Bennett to MacLaine are referenced here in the sensational arrangements and vocal performances. As good as classic show music gets.

Just because you can sing, doesn't mean you should
It sounds, having listened to Brian Newman's excellent Showboat album, that the same personnel feature on this album - indeed on reading the notes, all bar one are listed at the top of the musicians list. However that album's worst track was in fact the Gaga collaboration. And even as a HUGE fan of hers, the tracks on Harlequin are similarly serious artistic mis-steps. There's simply no need to cover these old songs unless you're going to bring new emotion and interpretations to them, which sadly she doesn't. She's a great singer for supercharged pop but lacks the timing to interpret jazz and classic era songs, as evidenced by her live performances with Tony Bennett, which were OK but nothing special. This however stands alone. It sounds like a performance - if tuneful and nominally spirited - that live performers of musicals churn out on a nightly basis. I'm not feeling the lurve or the fun. Zero emotion is conveyed, artifice but not art, which is not what I'm used to in her performances. Someone should take her aside and remind her what she does brilliantly. From a sorry fan.
