My daughter's favorite childhood movie!!
My oldest daughter, 28, used to watch this movie every night at bedtime. We have been looking for it off and on for years. It is a very sweet of two school age, Irish village "gangs" learn to deal with conflicts, class differences, and growing up.The movie explores how children who have been raised in very different family situations, including extreme poverty and wealth, abusive parents, and being raised in a very elitist manner. What starts with born "enemies" although not knowing the reasons way, ends in lifelong bonds that endure the faults and problems from their families and growing up.

Great Film
This is one of my favorite films. If you haven't watched it, you really should. You get to feel all kinds of different emotions for these kids and when the comedy hits you can't help but laugh at their antics!

War of the Buttons
"War of the Buttons" was made in 1994.The theme for the movie, I guess, is 'boys will be boys'no matter where in the world they are. This movie was filmed in Ireland and the story deals withrivalry between two boy gangs each located in a town onopposite sides of a river - the Ballydowse and theCarrickdowse. The bridge separating the two has a linedrawn across the centre which marks the territorialborder for each and nobody dares cross over it.The rival gangs taunt each other with name calling, daresand challenges usually ending up with a battle forsupremacy. It all appears to be good harmless fun and the perfectoccasion to let off steam and engage in a jolly goodromp. Anyone captured endures humiliation at the hands ofhis captors by having all his buttons cut off and belts.ties and shoe laces cut to pieces. It is all good fun whichoccasionally gets out of hand. The movie itself is something different and its difficultnot to become involved in its infectious and entertainingramblings.Who hasn't done the same or wanted to do the same as a boy?

Gem of a movie - wish it were out on DVD!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!
Deceptively simple. This movie looks at adult's wars/history through the eyes of a group of Irish school children. Historical events that they study in the classroom get re-interpreted and played out in the conflict between the two groups, leading to an escalation that *nearly* ends in tragedy. It makes for an exploration of all that is noble and petty in any conflict, adult or child. It deals with not only violence between the boys (and girls), but child abuse and a whole village's complicity-through-silence. It is funny and moving and sad at times, but manages to end with good triumphing over near-tragedy.There are a few things I would want to discuss with any kids before I watched it with them. The first is the issue of child abuse, and the second is the nostalgic boys-will-be-boys attitude that the adults have towards their children's violence (and which permeates the film itself). Children sensitive to death, injury or peril of characters may find the conflicts between the gangs less distressing than the child abuse and the death/injury (non-graphic) of animals.

This was a wonderful film, but not a children's movie.
This "war" breaks out between the boys of a neighboring village when one calls the other a terrible word that he heard (probably at home). The injured party doesn't know what the insulting term means - and it's entirely possible that the lad who used it didn't, either. The battles display elements commonly found in grown-up skirmishes, including strategy, subterfuge, and even enhanced interrogation, profiteering, cowardice, and valor. I don't suppose it will spoil the story if I disclose the information that a "toss-pot" is a drunkard, for viewers who are unfamiliar with the term.

Feel good movie
I first watched this movie with my mother back in the late 90s. I remembered it as a fun adventure story about two rival boys. Watching it again as an adult it is a cute kids story about childhood struggles and family life and how two towns can't get over their feud that's been dragging on by the children of the towns since before any of the adults can recall. Overall, it's still a fun movie.

More Than Just Buttons
This is an absolutely delightful little Irish film that is enjoyable and has a powerful message of teamwork and comeraderie on a deeper level. The movie was filmed in some of the most scenic areas of West Cork in Ireland. It's beautifully acted by a legion of young male actors and one young female. The main adult role is played by Colm Meany, well-known on both sides of the Atlantic. The plot revolves around the rivalry between the boys of neighboring Irish villages. Beneath this level, there's the story of teamwork and cooperation. Beneath that level is the story of pain, dealing with it and reaching out to help. It's impossible not to like this film. You'll enjoy many laughs...and perhaps even wish you had a tissue too.

Wow!
Haven't seen this movie in years; I have it in VHS only. So I was stoked to see it in dvd and had to nab it. Glad I did and it was still great to watch all these years later. The only gripe I have is with the cover; there are plenty of cool war scenes in that film and they chose where the boys go naked?

Absolutely Amazing Movie
Fantastic adaptation of a French novel. Highly recommend for everyone to watch. Family friendly. A beautiful insight into the life and culture of two small Irish towns. It will make you laugh, reflect, and appreciate family and friends.
