... of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow is the best series I've ever read
This Eagles of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow is the best series I've ever read. Every book has been hard to put down. The main characters of Macro and Cato really grow on you and it's exciting to follow them through their adventures. You learn a lot about Rome and the Roman Empire as well as it's military campaigns, strategies and weapons. Mr. Scarrow has done serious research in every region in which his stories are set so there's lots of historical accuracy. He will admit when he has taken literary license to "fill in the blanks" where there's missing information. I love this series!

Another Scarrow Novel
Good read. A lot of action.

The Adventures of Cato and Macro.
As always wit Simon Scarrow, I found his work excellent. There is always a sense of anticipation, of what next, he never disappoints. If you have an interest in Ancient Rome, Scarrow is your man, he takes you like a time traveler, in this case, Hispania (Spain). There is constant action with violence, the Roman legion against local guerrillas with Rome winning, of course. With lots of personal stories, e.g., Cato, Macro, and others assorted characters. I can't wait for the next book!

Very readable but not the best in the series
Very readable but not the best in the series. The ending was too abrupt and, to my way of thinking, more of the outstanding issues raised in the book should have been finalized.

A nice addition to the stories of Macro and Cato
Ahhhh, a new Macro and Cato book, always something I enjoy. Mr. Scarrow has really captured me with these two. What I was waiting to see was how Mr. Scarrow would handle Macro and Cato with Britannia being pretty wrapped up at least until Macro's old girlfriend gets upset; ok, back to Praetorians!Macro's and Cato's second round with the Praetorians was better than the first one. While I enjoyed the political intrigue the first time around (a little more of a Cato thing) the open combat in this one is outstanding. Rather than being a simple battle (is it ever for Macro and Cato) there's a little intrigue, a nice open field battle, with a good siege component that reminded me of a mixture of Rorkes Drift and WWI (sorry, you need to read to possibly understand the connection). While I don't expect Macro and Cato's opponents to always be great individuals, this one was a nice addition. All said, Mr. Scarrow seems to be on a nice upswing with Macro and Cato and I only ask one question, what's next?!?

Allies more dangerous than foes?
Another excellent Macro and Cato adventure, this time placing them in ancient Spain. What appears as a clear cut campaign against a slave uprising, becomes one in which the enemy might be closer than suspected. Are Macro and Cato on this campaign to be saviors of the region or its victims? It seems the two have made enemies back in Rome and the duo fear they have been left out on a limb with no help except for what they can muster using their own know how and courage. With limited resources and manpower, can they protect a small settlement against thousands of savage warriors?

battle scenes are still awesome. Didn't like the angry romance part
battle scenes are still awesome. Didn't like the angry romance part. I think it may have to do with the author's personal history. Still didn't take away from the storyline, it was everything I expected form Mr. Scarrow.

Good read, specially the end.
I began this story disliking everything I read, since Cato's life since the last book took a turn for the worse, which did not improve as the novel begins. However the plot develops and my impression is that Simon Scarrow has matured as a writer and now he really has hit his stride as a writer of considerable talent.I believe that the best Cato and Macro stories will follow, as Nero begins his reign. There is a Parthian campaign under general Corbulo. Suetonius Paulinus will crush a revolt in Britain. There will be a campaign in the Bosphurus and a revolt in Judea. Then Vindex and Galba will revolt and eventually Galba will become emperor, after the year of four emperors, including our old friend Vitellius. Then another old friend - Vespasian - will become emperor. The best is yet to come!

A bit worse then previous but always interesting
I like very much this serie ! At this book I give 3 stars instead of 5 because, I'm not English mother tongue, and this time I have had more difficult to read it as well . I hope that from next I'll return to read it in easier way, as usual
