EMDR Toolbox: Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation (1st Edition, Paperback) – Highly Rated EMDR Book

Must Read
If you are practicing EMDR this book is a must read (even if you are not it is worth reading) I find it unfortunate that we are not more fluent in the underpinnings of pain and trauma as it relates to helping people heal. Jim Knipe beautifully identifies the presence of dissociation and the importance of having fluency in not only identifying this as an outcome of trauma but as a consistent outcome. Our field is becoming more fluent in the complexity of trauma. EMDR is an incredible approach that expedites the process of finding relief. The way Knipe organizes his material and presents it in highly readable and understandable ways has impacted the way that I practice in general. There are so many books and it is difficult to discern which one is a must, which one would be nice to have, and which one's to pass. This one is a must.

Great book. I have read "The Body Keeps the Score" by Van Der Kolk. This helps in showing that some things can be tied to others and offers some ways to go about it if you seem stuck. I am not a therapist, but I wanted to understand the issue behind PTSD for my own purposes. I had a very abusive childhood and wanted to understand what happens to the mind. It is pretty technical and definitely was a hard read due to my lack of training, but there are many nuggets to be found in this book, even for a regular person like me. Would be great for actual therapists since it talks about other theories and how those can be tied to sessions of EMDR training.

Jim (as his clients refer to him) is the most gifted therapist I have ever met. I consider it a privilege to have worked with him, and as a former client, I can verify that the techniques he shares in this book really work. The case studies demonstrate the gifted way he uses the techniques he teaches in the book. These case studies bring his methods to life.I hope all of the therapist who use EMDR in their practices will read this book and add it to their libraries. I am thankful that Jim took the time to write this book so others could experience his giftedness

Great Book
As a clinician that has read several books in the field this is one of the books that needs to be read cover to cover. The information is very useful especially the Word for Word session examples given. Very helpful! Using the techniques in session and has been healing to my clients!!

Much Better than the Title
This is much more sophisticated than a toolbox, because Dr. Knipe explains the dynamics of how trauma is trapped in place so it can be safely addressed with EMDR. My technique has grown, and I've known what to do when a trauma is linked to a dissociative or idealizing defense or is held in place by shame.

This book is a wonderful resource for learning new approaches for applying EMDR with clients. Also, Knipe's use of ovals in depicting the personality, defenses and trauma memories helps to explain these concepts to clients. This is a book I will return to multiple times.

FANTASTIC book!
"EMDR Toolbox" is an exceptional book. I specialize in treating PTSD and Complex PTSD in people with chronic pain, and the standard EMDR protocol wasn't going far enough. Dr. Knipe's very thorough and well-written book is exactly what I needed to expand my EMDR repertoire. I can't recommend it highly enough!

The lovely eye procedure was a great tool and also how to deal with dissociation
After I did my EMDR training I noticed that some patients' trauma was linked to attachment issues and also some patients were too afraid of facing the trauma. The lovely eye procedure was a great tool and also how to deal with dissociation. Without this book, I would have no clue how to treat this kind of patients.

Highly recommended!
Fantastic insights into working clinically with complex PTSD, personality disorders, and dissociation. As an EMDR Consultant I would highly recommend this book for those who have completed all parts of basic training and are competent in the basic protocol. It will help considerably in knowing specific tools to utilising EMDR with complex presentations.
