I would imagine that as long as it is closed any smells would be kept at bay but would be released if it opens to let liquid out. It is not primarily designed to keep out odours. **Q: What if the outlet pipe has a slight fall to it, does that prevent the flap from closing properly or should last length of pipe be horizontal ?** A: 1 depends on the fall but if you put the outlet level then you get the best advantage.
