Great for 11-14’ but not truly dimmable
10/18 I have 12 foot ceiling in my garage. It is 23‘ x 26‘. I am using four of these and it is ample. I would do six if I was wrenching on vehicles all the time or if I am constantly doing piecework that needs excellent lighting from every angle. These lights are exactly the same as those that can be found in an orange big box store for double the price the only difference is a small sticker placed on the back of the items. I chose this light because after in-depth research for my new construction I realized I wanted a sealed light because with 12’ ceilings I do not want to have to climb up there and clean bugs out of the lens; ever. So that reduced my choices to surface mounted vapor lights or canopy lights. Vapor lights are very ugly although their length provides a slight advantage of beam angle over most canopy lights. Most canopy lights have a beam angle of 110 or 120°. Basically they are spot lights that shoot straight down. If you’re ceiling height is like 16 or 20 feet high this is fine but not for a 12’ garage. This light has a beam angle of 160° so with relatively low ceilings you get good light dispersion. Also, being a canopy light, it is waterproof which to me means it is bug free and I will never have to climb up and clean the lens. Woo hoo! Also, the fact that it is round - to me anyway - it seems a little bit more appealing than most square canopy lights. Finally I wanted something very bright. This light at 8000+ lumens is almost as bright as I wanted. It’s 5000 Kelvin (white/sharp/unnatural/great for wrenching on small stuff) and I wanted 4000 Kelvin (yellow/soft/natural Easy on the eyes and matched the outdoor sunshine better) but I knew that before purchase so I’m just mentioning that this light only comes 5K. Here’s the catch: this light is ONLY dimmable by using a sensor mounted off the side. You can tell it’s not truly dimmable because there are only three wires out the pigtail - Power, neutral, ground - and truly dimmable led lights will have 5 wires out the tail; the extra 2 for dim control. On this light, the two wires for dimming control are only available via the side port where the optional motion sensor would mount. You cannot modify (drill holes) in the chassis or you void the warranty, and just running the wires out the side port and up into the ceiling not only would look stupid but presents mounting challenges. Maybe you can do it but not me so therefore I am not using the dimming function. Since I will only turn these lights on when I’m actually looking for something or working on something and need the lights to be as bright as they can be I think I’ll be fine without the dimmers. But if I were to be using this light often and for extended periods I probably would want to have the dimming function available. I would not pay big box store prices for this light because of this design issue. I had some issues with shipping but the seller took care of me. So yeah, I’d say if your garage is between 11 and 16 feet high, sealed/bug free/vapor tight is important, you are good with the circular/bubble look and you do NOT need the dimming function or you intend to use the motion sensors, then this is a very good choice at $60 each. I’ve no way to verify the 8000 Lumens but they are equal to the ones returned to HD. Will update my review if they seem to fade, flicker or otherwise disappoint. There is a slight delay when turning them on like many higher lumen lights. Thanks and please carefully click ‘helpful’ if you made it this far ;)
