Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. 2003 album from the critically adored Alt-Folk band. Best described as the charming older brother to the band's previous outing Castaways & Cutouts, this album is an altogether different beast. Musically, they travel into new territory, mining deeper into their Beatle-pop influences, lush and intricate.

Ultimately Listenable
Wow, I have to say, this is a fantastic album. I can't find a song on it that I really don't like... The music is beautiful, the lyrics are meaningful (mostly themed around WWI, I believe) and the art on the jacket is great. Even the story on the inside sleeve adds depth to the album. If you're a fan of the Decemberists or indie rock in general you'll like this. I think if you like The Shins you'll like this album. Enjoy it!

odd, wonderful, and funny
Love this album...This is such a unique group, mindful of various British groups from the 60's, yet with their own totally new take on things which is like a satyr of the 60's "life will be good" thing...very real, very tongue in cheek...and great to listen to music.

Decemberists Are Always Interesting.
Back to the old style Decemberists. This is not The King Is Dead. Not an immediate thrill but will grow. Are these lyrics random scraps, metaphoric, mysteriously poetic or just pretentious? Never mind, the sound is good, although Meloy's voice gets a bit whiny towards the end. Maybe too.much of a good thing?

Not their very best...
Not their strongest album, but still well worth having for any fans of the band. Personal favourite tracks Los Angeles I'm Yours, and The Bachelor and the Bride
