It is intended to be used on cardboard and even if you use it on cardboard it shouldn't be too thick because it is very difficult to get through. If I'm punching an image I would need to see if I'm over it correctly** A: Yes, you can see the image and where you position the circle, by turning it over. Then you can place it just where you need it. I love mine. It is a great punch. **Q: This says it cuts a scalloped circle but it shows a smooth one. Which is correct?** A: I have both the scalloped and the smooth. Sometimes Amazons picture are incorrect.
