One of the best history books in India
Some right wing people won't like this book for having a "left bias". They are not completely wrong, but they are not completely correct also. This book is balanced most of the time. It speaks against communalism, superstitions, etc, which is absolutely essential. And most of all, it's very essential to read this book to write nicest answers in UPSC mains, along with a deep understanding of history of modern India.

Good for general reading
Good for general reading. Also read the writings of people of those times to build a better perspective. For UPSC, go for spectrum. Teachers who recommend it for upsc simply because they read it 20-30 years ago and can't get over this book even when better options are available

Deft touching of all major themes and undercurrents.
I have purchased this book in Mid-March, 2017, and was able to finish within a week! That would suffice to speak volumes about the lucid and simple style of Bipan Chandra's 'History of Modern India'.Beginning with the sad yet inevitable decline of the Mughal Empire and ending with Indian Independence, all major themes and undercurrents are deftly touched in a brief and story like manner, never losing focus on objectivity. Perhaps the best book which could give premier and comprehensive causes and effects for issues like Fall of Mughal Empire, Split of Indian National Congress (1907 Surat Session). But nowadays, there is criticism towards the book for it's Congress centric approach (a bit harsh), but still best as a primary history book. Other view points from various books would do well to compliment and ensure a better understanding of the subject.A must for every self confessing Indian History buff, more so for a civil servant aspirant. And to Amazon, which has set such brilliant standards for delivering on time (within 5 days, I stay in interior Andhra - Rural) - Kudos!
