This converter / decoder worked perfect for my equipment configuration. I connected a TV that had only an optical output to the analog inputs of a Bose Wave Music System used as the external speaker.The Panasonic 40” plasma TV has only an optical output (using a Toslink optical cable). There is no way of configuring the TV to output only PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation). Many older TV shows may broadcast in PCM however all newer shows broadcast in Digital DTS/AC3 (Dolby surround sound).The Bose Wave Music System (radio / stereo) has stereo inputs using analog RCA jacks that require PCM.This unit CONVERTS the optical input signal via Toslink (from the TV) to analog stereo signals using RCA analog wiring AND DECODES the Digital DTS/AC3 to PCM (for the Bose).And on top of all of the good things it does, it comes with an optical cable and 5VDC power adapter, all at a great price!

Here is my setup:My TV broadcasting can only output Dolby Digital (No PCM). And it only has Optical Audio output (Toslink).My soundbar has Optical and RCA inputs. The Optical can only take PCM. So a direct optical cable won't work.This device converts Dolby digital to analog (RCA) and it works for my setup.This is what you need if you have the same situation as mine.There are similar converters which only support PCM or LPCM. Those won't work.

I got this model for its ability to convert dolby digital (or PCM). First tried to use it and no sound came thru. Switched out the optical cable with another I had and it works as expected. Not sure if I want to return it or spend the extra money to buy a different optical cable. Would have been nice of the power source had the option to plug into a USB (as well as a 120 outlet)

do not purchase this product. I bought two and neither worked out

This device is not outputting 5.1 it will only do stereo . I am pretty frustrated overall, but it does work well for stereo so 2 stars
