The film depicts a mentally unstable Vietnam war veteran named Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), who becomes a night shift New York City taxi driver to cope with his chronic insomnia. Whilst driving passengers around the city, he witnesses sleaze, violence and prostitution on a nightly basis, feeding his growing urge for violent action as he attempts to save child prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster) from her pimp and his goons.
