The best uke at this price.
I recently ordered this ukulele and 4 others while researching products for my senior adult choir at church as I wanted to give them a few options. [4/20/16 edit: When I ordered this ukulele originally it was a "Mahalo U-30BR" in standard brown. I'm assuming that this is the same company with a new name?. I honestly don't know why it redirects here and don't know for sure that it's exactly the same quality etc. Be advised....] Okina UK100 Soprano Ukulele with Rosewood Fingerboard - Natural Diamond Head DU-150 Ukulele, Natural Mahalo U-30OR Painted Economy Soprano Ukulele (Orange) Lanikai LU-11 Soprano Ukulele Kala KA-15S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele The Okina, Diamond Head and Mahalo were all under $30 at the time and within $2 price of each other. Of the three, I thought that the Mahalo was the best offering both visually and in terms of tone quality. The Okina had a poor sound quality even compared to my own 20- and 40-year-old ukuleles (which had the original strings). A string upgrade to Aquila strings helped significantly, but even then, the Okina still had a far worse sound quality at this price level. The Diamond Head and Mahalo both sounded better even with the stock strings and each includes a very nice (for this price) little gig bag. Incidentally, what the Mahalo product description says is a "color-matching brown gigbag" ended up being black, but black is pretty standard gig bag color. The Mahalo has the most "island" look to my eyes and the best sound. Much of the sound can probably be attributed to the strings which are more substantial than the Diamond Head's. That being said, it still makes financial and practical sense to get the Mahalo since it's so near the same price (compared to the Diamond Head) and has better strings already installed. I've also reviewed the Lanikai and Kala on their own pages.

Best place to start for a lady or child (folks with smaller hands)
Purchased in 2015. Five years later, still picking on it and enjoying it. Great little uke. If you're thinking of buying your first uke, I would definitely recommend this to a lady or child. But I think any soprano uke is pretty small for the average man's hands to manage all of the important chords. There are several chords I cannot force my fingers to squeeze into simply because of the small footprint of the soprano fretboard. I think men should consider a tenor uke instead, which I intend to buy soon. That said, this is a wonderful starter uke. It cost almost half this price 5 years ago, but then lots of things have inflated prices like that since then. This uke is simple, built from simple materials, you can't hurt it much, it stays in tune (I upgraded the strings immediately to Aquila), has really cool dolphin-style tuner backing plates, and many fun colors to choose.

For the price, this is alright.
This review is for the Hamano U-30BK. **Two years ago this same listing was for the Mahalo U-30BR which was my first and still favorite uke. This is not the same instrument although the body shape (at least on the outside) is identical.**This ukulele comes with Aquila Super Nylgut strings which are considered high-quality. The black finish is attractive and smooth but also shiny and will smudge. The tuners are very rough--like, VERY rough--to turn which I've never observed in other ukes, however it doesn't affect their ability to keep strings in tune. The saddle and nut feel cheap and not carefully made. I broke two low-G strings in the process of getting them on the uke before I realized it was the uke and not the strings that were flawed. The edge of the saddle was too sharp. Similarly the slits in the nut were too narrow and also sharp. I was able to file the edges and widen the slit for my low-G string with a nail file so it's a quick fix if you have that or some sandpaper.I’m pretty happy with the quality of the sound of this ukulele. It’s also got surprisingly strong volume for a soprano. It feels great in my hands because it’s exactly the same outward shape as my first uke. The strings are high-quality as I said, but I might restring it with something lighter like Martin polycarbonate because right now the Aquila Super Nylgut (and the Aquila Red series low-G that I put in) feel like overkill on this instrument. If I buy another soprano, I probably would go for something else, but at around $40 this is not a purchase I regret.

Awesome for the price :)
I was surprised to see that this was a nice quality instrument. I was quite skeptical at first, because of some of the negative reviews, but it is actually decent. I mean, it's not like, life-changing-ly impressive, but it's a lot nicer than I expected. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one ask a gift, or just for fun. The strings suck, which I expected, so I've also ordered Aquila strings, but they haven't gotten here yet, so I can't tell how much of a difference that makes yet, but I'll update my review when I change the strings. But otherwise, the sound is still pretty nice, and it's kind of adorable. The frets were real metal, instead of just painted on, and it has the cute little dolphin geared tuners. There are a couple of blemishes in the paint, but overall it's not bad. The neck and the bridge are a tad bit crooked, but again, not too bad. Overall, I'm really happy with this purchase, and I love it :)

A great value Ukulele
Had the urge to learn to play a stringed instrument and bought this not expecting too much, surely at this price it'd be nothing more than an expensive toy? I was greatly mistaken. This little instrument can actually carry a decent tune and as a newcomer it was very easy to pick up and within a few hours of playing was able to belt out some classics, much to the annoyance to everyone else within earshot. There's lots and lots of resources on the internet to help ukulele newbies - my advice is find a YouTube video and play along. This has been played almost daily for around 8 months, still with the same set of strings and the bodywork is still a bright shiny red with only minimal signs of usage.Make sure you download a ukulele tuning app or buy a cheap ukulele tuner as over the first few dozen hours of playing I found the strings will need slight retuning,Android tuner app: Easy Ukulele - Ukulele Tuner Clip on tuner: Eno ET 33U Clip-On Ukulele Tuner Spare strings: Mahalo Soprano Ukulele StringsEasy Ukulele - Ukulele TunerEno ET 33U Clip-On Ukulele TunerMahalo Soprano Ukulele Strings

Needs extras if buying for a child
I like this - I like its colour, I like its cover, I like that a child can properly use the strings, I like its price. But to all those adults buying for children: I have bought two very different children a uke from two different makers and suppliers, because parents/teachers recommended one. The children were both so pleased at the time. One month, 6 months, 2 years after: they don't even know where their uke is, let alone are using it. It needs too many extras: a way of tuning it, music that they identify with, music they can play. At the moment, a uke can't do that! That's not Mahalo's fault so is no reflection on this product - that's why I've given it 5*. But I won't be buying another.

A total bargain.
I bought this because I wanted to take up the ukulele and didn't want to spend much until I found out whether I was going to be any good at it. My thinking was that if I was still playing in six months time, maybe I could upgrade.I was worried at first because I could not get it to stay in tune, but by the time I'd had it a week it had settled down and now holds its tune really well. It's a great sound, I love it, and I feel in no hurry to get a more expensive uke. It seems astonishing to me that I was able to buy a musical instrument of such quality so cheaply.

You'll be strumming away in no time
It does what it says on the tin, a ukulele for beginners. Nothing special, just a plain, cheap ukulele that is perfect if you're starting out on the ukulele. Yes, it will go out of tune, so a tuning device of some sort will be needed in order to get each string the right note. The strings will go out of tune, but this only happens a few times at the beginning, after that, you don't have to re-tune it often at all.Overall, perfect when you're starting out. Oh yeah, you also get a cool bag to put it in.

20 quids worth of joy
shiny red and well made.I decided that if I was still playing at the end of the year I would treat myself and up scale it a bit, maybe to a concert. With a £4 Uke for dummies book I am set up. However playing twinkle twinkle little star is beginning to annoy my partner, so time to knuckle down and learn something less appropriate to primary school christmas concerts..
