Designing yachts?........then this is a must read book.

Not for the aspirational designer
This book is very basic and I do not agree with the publisher's review above. This book is not a "how to design" book and it will not be "useful reading for first year naval architect students". The book title should in fact be called A Brief Overview of Yacht Design. It is a very thin book with no technical content at all - which some people may like. If you have aspirations to design sailing yachts or are even just interested in the subject matter then buy Principles of Yacht Design -- Lars Larsson, Rolf E. Eliasson.

Steady as she goes.
I do wish there were more reviews of this book especially from first year students, it may well be the perfect book for someone just starting out, having a degree in mathematics may well be a hindrance to yacht design, after all it is an art not a science! At the other end of the scale I know of two sailing vessel designers and builders who haven't a clue about prismatic coefficients and centre of efforts/resistances and I'd go around Cape Horn in a gale in anything they had built...........I cut my naval architectural teeth on Skene's Elements of, Birts and Chapelle and as a raw beginner it took a bit of time for the penny to drop, oh yes, and I'm absolutely useless at maths, a poor 4th CSE 46 years ago yet I'm a brilliant draughtsman and shipwright.I have a good few of Ian's books and all are regular favourites for reference, the man thinks and writes as a practical man not an academic which all good designers and builders need to be.
