An American student (Ethan Hawkes) strikes up a conversation on a train with a young Parisian woman (Julie Delpy), whilst Eurorailing in Austria. On the spur of the moment he invites her to spend the day with him in Vienna, and a casual acquaintance turns into something more profound. American indie director Richard Linklater pays homage to French auteur Eric Rohmer as he lets his characters talk their way into, around and out of each others' affections.

A lovely, gentle, very re-watchable film.
A little like 'Lost in Translation', this is a very gentle and likeable film. I find it very re-watchable and it's become one of my 'go-to films when I want something pleasant and familiar to watch. The performances of the two main actors are superb and following their conversation as the characters get to know each other is simply lovely. Well scripted, well performed, and well shot, this is a gem of a film. Naturally, if you're looking for any kind of action or laugh-out-loud humour this won't be for you.

Wish I'd Seen It As A Younger Man
Nothing wrong with this film at all, but wish I'd seen it as a romantic, impressionable teenager...then I probably would have loved it. This ageing part-time cynic enjoyed the film's pure heart and lovely performances, but it didn't leave the same impression on me it clearly did on just about every girl I've ever gone out with ...they all loved it! Ho hum.

But late to the party...
Not sure why it took me so long to watch. Just lovely. Do love a bit of Ethan Hawke 😍

Simply beautiful
Or beautifully simple? Either way I loved it, a gentle and insightful perspective on a brief intense relationship (encounter)

Beautiful
Amazing movie. With a low budget you can make a beautiful movie, through very interesting and passionate dialogues.
