Ossie Ardiles and Steve Perryman became household names in England when they signed for Tottenham in 1978 amid a blaze of media publicity but it was their part in Argentina's World Cup victory earlier in the same year that ensured their status as national heroes in their own country. Held in Argentina, the 1978 World Cup was scripted to be the hosts golden opportunity to claim the Jules Rimet trophy for the first time in their history and so proved as the team bounced back from a group defeat to Italy to reach the second phase. Victories over Peru and Poland and a goalless draw with arch-rivals Brazil saw Argentina through to the final in Buenos Aries on goal difference, setting up what was to be an epic clash with Holland. The match was an engrossing encounter. The hosts took the lead in the first-half through Mario Kempes and seemed to be heading for victory until Dick Nanninga equalised for the Dutch with just eight minutes on the clock. The final went into extra-time and it was Argentina would held their nerve when it mattered, scoring through Kempes again and Ricardo Bertoni to secure a famous 3-1 win and earn the title of world champions for the first time.
