Authorized by Hanban, HSK Standard Course is developed under the joint efforts of Beijing Language and Culture University Press and Chinese Testing International (CTI). With HSK test papers as its primary source, HSK Standard Course is characterized by a humorous style, familiar topics and a scientific course design. Matching the HSK test in all aspects, from the content, form to the levels, it is a series of new-type course books embodying the idea of “combining testing and teaching, and promoting learning and teaching by testing”. It is suitable for the Confucius Institutes in different countries as well as other Chinese teaching institutions and self-taught learners. The whole series is divided into six levels matching the HSK test, with one volume for each of Levels 1-3 and two volumes for each of Levels 4-6, totaling nine volumes. With a textbook, a workbook and a teacher’s book in each volume, there are altogether 27 books. This is Textbook 1, which includes 15 lessons and covers 150 words and 45 language points required by the HSK Level 1 test. Upon finishing this book, students will be able to “understand and use a few simple Chinese words and sentences to meet their specific needs in communication and to prepare themselves for further learning”. The book is illustrated with photos match the style of the test and is printed in full color. This book is provided with audio files, which can be obtained through the QR code on the back cover. Review: Five Stars - If you liked 4A,you should purchase this book to continue practicing. Review: Four Stars - Good review and interesting content. I thought pinyin was unnecessary at this level.

No pinyin support whatsoever!
Beware! There is absolutely no pinyin to support the reading of Chinese characters.

exactly as expected; good quality textbook perfect for HSK4 learners
The textbook includes pinyin for all the words, but on a different page which is useful if you're learning and want to figure out the words yourself. It also includes English translations for the questions included which is helpful. There are also audios that are compatible with the textbook so you can hear the stories out loud to work on pronunciation etc. The seller is also responsive; i asked a question and they answered promptly.

Excellent
I picked up HSK Standard Course 4A Textbook (and its equally hardworking sibling, 4B) for my course, and I can confirm: this book means business. If you thought learning Chinese was going to be a gentle stroll… this is more of a brisk march with vocabulary flashcards shouting encouragement at you from all directions. But in a good way. A very productive, slightly humbling way. The structure is excellent—clear, logical, and designed to stop you pretending you “basically get it” when you absolutely do not. Each unit builds steadily, layering grammar, vocabulary, and listening skills until you suddenly realise you can actually understand things that previously sounded like very fast poetry. It’s not flashy, it’s not trying to be your best friend, and it definitely won’t laugh at your jokes—but it will teach you Chinese. Efficiently. Relentlessly. Possibly with a raised eyebrow. What I really appreciated is how practical it is. Everything feels geared towards real progress, not just ticking boxes. And yes, 4A and 4B together form a kind of dynamic duo of linguistic discipline. In short: serious, effective, and mildly intimidating—like a very strict but ultimately fair teacher. Highly recommended… even if it occasionally makes you question your life choices.
