Cosmetic update with disappointing artwork
I have been playing DnD since the late 1970s, from the 1st edition. This Players Handbook is a largely cosmetic update. There are many illustrations, although these are by a variety of artists without a common style and many are very camp (as in 'overly flamboyant') and do not fit my perception of the game at all, one largely formed by the artwork of the very talented David Trampier. I have deducted one star because of this. There is improved editing, larger font, better presentation, improvements and fixes here and there (notably consistency in that each class now has four subclasses), and a useful rules glossary. This update does not have substantive changes to rules - the 5e mechanic already works - but ultimately, the game does come across as a bit 'over-engineered'.

Beautiful in every way
I am in love with the new book. The layout is fantastic, much easier to navigate than the old PHB. Things are easy to find now and not just spread all over the place. The new backgrounds are great and easy to work with, as is the updated stat bl9cks for monsters. They have much more infomation on them, which I always found I was missing during DMing sessions. It came in excellent condition, although I wish it was plastic wrapped to protect it from warehouse muck as there is a small dirt patch on the bottom pages but its a minor gripe.I definatly wish this had been out when I dtarted playing several years ago; it would have made learning the game alot easier to process.

Everything you need!
The media could not be loaded. This book is an excellent buy! On the advice of a fellow adventurer, I bought this after Christmas and I'm happy I did. This has everything you need to know as a player of DnD, and even info you could use to your advantage as a DM. I can't wait to use the knowledge I've gained from reading this in our campaign. It even has the new character sheet that look a lot easier to utilise. Great value for money that even a beginner can utilise this book to play as an advanced character.

The art is awful, but there is some good stuff in here.
The art looks like tumbler fan-fic, the background text and other fluff is bland and uninspiring, it comes off like it was written by millennial hipsters who have never set foot outside of an urban area and have zero life experience. The character creation is at the same time aimless and railroady, race (or should I say species) is now almost meaningless, while background is now so important that in most cases you only have 1 choice if you don't want to gimp yourself. Every possible option for out of class weapon and armour selection is locked out until level 4. If you want to play an elven wizard who also knows how to use a long bow, you need to either multiclass, or spend your level 4 feet learning all martial weapons.Having said that there is some good stuff in here. The rebalanced spells are much better. all the classes feel like they have some valid options. Warlocks for example are no longer locked to eldritch blast, Pact of the blade is available from level 1, and it comes with the option to use Cha for attack and damage. But even this is spoiled by the bad writing, ability descriptions are a jumbled mess of flavour text and mechanical description. The Soulknife is a good example. the class states that you create a blade when you take the attack action or make an opportunity attack and that the blade vanishes after the attack, you are then told that you can make a second attack with a psychic blade in your off hand as a bonus action, but doesn't give you the ability to summon one as part of that action. It's a small oversight and its easy to see what the intention was, but it's also something that should have been spotted and fixed before getting published and the book is full of these sloppy mistakes.TLDRDon't buy this book, use the free rules that will be out in a month or so, it will give you all the benefits of the new rule set without the badly written fluff.
