I bought this direct from Wegen on the recommendation of a talented Gypsy jazz playing friend. He told me these are very popular in that community and, after trying, I can see why.Firstly, it is exquisitely made. No, it is not bone, horn or Unobtanium, but plastic. But the type of plastic (acrylic?) chosen is ideal for this use and is machined beautifully to shape. The grooved surface and concave grip give a very positive grip which defies being lost in even the hottest and sweatiest of jam sessions. Being plastic, rather than a heavier bone or stone, its relatively light weight also avoids that effect that really heavy picks can have of "fretting" the string at the point of contact, creating an unwanted "chirp"-like attack to the note (a problem which makes me avoid glass or stone picks like the plague). The shape itself is an offset large jazz shape, similar in size to my favourite Ultex 2.00mm, but thicker and with a pronounced and highly polished slant to the edge, which facilitates the sweep picking used in this style of playing. Across acoustic and electric guitars, this is very effective, facilitating up and down sweeps and economy picking. It is equally at home on nylon strings too, making this very versatile. However, this pick is quite thick at 3.5mm and the slant means it is only suitable for right-handed players. I am happy with picks up to 4mm thick, and I can attest that somewhere between 1.75mm and 4mm is, in my opinion, the sweet-spot for pick thickness. However, it will take a little getting used to if you're used to more flimsy picks (e.g. below 1.5mm).However, it is worth persevering: it doesn't take long to get used to it, but when you do, you'll be rewarded with a far more accurate feel for the strings and more accurate playing as a result. The tone will also impress. At this price, this won't replace my go-to 2.00mm Ultex picks for every day use/gigs (I just can't afford to lose this one!), but it does have a place in my collection. It is certainly worth the price, being (as I understand it) handmade.Highly recommended: just don't lose it!
