Q: What is the diameter of the trays (bottom not top) so I can see if I can find different bowls?

sorry can't give you dimensions, but I can tell you I do not recommend this feeder. The one I had rusted right away and the trays hold water. I recommend you look at a "neater feeder" my dog is a slob and this works very well for me. Just a suggestion

Length is 20" and width is 10".

Q: Is it really sturdy enough? I have a Great Dane. Also one of the reviews said paint flakes off

I have a 120 pound Belgian shepherd and he hasn't pushed it over. It has been sturdy enough for him. The paint hasn't flaked a all and have cleaned it a couple of times. I am overall satisfied with it. The bowls are alittle thin but I think they work fine.

Q: Could you use your own bowls with this? What is the size of the insert for the bowls?

Yes, I use my own stainless steel bowls sorry don't know size for sure maybe 2 qt they are pretty large as I have a golden retriever
