Works Fabulously - Troubleshooting Included in Review

*by J***I on Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015*

I got my Coffeeduck as an early Christmas present to myself. I will say, bar none, when used with the Senseo maker it helps to enhance any coffee flavor-wise, not strength-wise. I've used this with basic Folgers and plan on buying beans and a burr to grind my own. It's economical as a tablespoon and a half will make an 18oz cup of coffee that's better than coffee from any coffee joint. Compared to the Keurig, the way the Senseo/Coffeeduck steam the grounds help a lot to preserve flavor and release the full depth of your coffee. I have had a LOT of the same issues that users have reported, however I had the patience to work through them and find the cause of the issue and solution on my own. Without further ado, here is my unofficial troubleshooting guide to the Coffeeduck:Water Leakage from Pod AreaImmediately stop the brew process by pressing the power button. Grounds have gotten under the screen lip and prevented a good seal. Remove the Coffeeduck from the brewer, grounds and all in it and take it to the sink, lift the screen, and wipe away any excess grounds where the screen connects with the metal lip. Rinse top screen off. Take a paper towel and wipe top metal round part on Senseo brewer and all inners where the Coffeeduck sits. Place Coffeeduck back in. Issue should be resolved. I've been using large ground Folgers type coffee so far. This may not be an issue with smaller grounds. This issue happens to me often when I am wanting a quick cup and don't pay close attention to the screen and grounds - just be careful of those things and this shouldn't happen.Loud Sounds/Brewer Shaking and Brew FailCheck Coffeeduck alignment within the brewer. Press Coffeeduck to be sure it is sitting snugly inside it. Rebrew.

Not as good as pods or espresso

*by H***S on Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2012*

I have used espresso machines, original Senseo Pods, Perfect Pod maker with Perfect Pod filters, Presto MyPod (lousy POS, absolutely no flavor) and now have also tried this Coffee Duck. IMHO the best balance between obtaining a flavorful cup of coffee and the difficulty in getting it has been with the Perfect Pod maker and filters. Price factors in there somewhere, and while this Duck has a permanent filter (until the mesh breaks, that is), the little bit of savings achieved by not having to buy filters or pre-made pods is outweighed by the less-than-optimal flavor.Coffee Duck - about as difficult and messy to use as espresso option, but does not produce the same flavor intensity and does not achieve good crema. Cleanup is easier than espresso, but not as easy as using filter pods. Filling the Duck is a little messy and takes about a minute to load it, pack it, and clean up the stray grinds. The Duck seemed to have a bit of a tight fit in my Senseo machine, and I had to be careful when closing and opening the cover to avoid damaging the locking mechanism.Original Senseo Pods - Expensive option, with very limited varieties available in stores, better variety available online.. Expensive in the stores, very expensive online. Really good flavor, better than Coffee Duck but not as good as espresso machines can produce. Admittedly, I have only tried Senseo-brand pods (medium roast, decaf, and a few others) and Folgers Columbian (my favorite pre-made pod, but no longer available). Have not tried any of the other brands available online due to high price. Cost could be improved if they made 2-cup pods instead forcing us to use two 1-cup pods.Espresso Machine - I have a Breville Roma unit, but my comments should apply to most espresso machines. Of the different options available to make coffee, espresso machines generally seem to produce the best flavor. However, they are time-consuming and messy to set up and clean up. Have to scoop coffee into the holder, pack it, load it, make the coffee, dump it, clean it, and then load it back onto the machine to give it a hot rinse. I am able to minimize the messiness of loading and packing it by fitting a small plastic cup into the holder to serve as a retaining wall (with bottom cut out) to keep the coffee grinds away from the sealing surfaces. For some inexplicable reason, home units are all designed to dispense espresso into two tiny cups instead of a single mug or travel tumbler. Since I can't fit my travel mug under the dispensing point, I can't use the espresso machine for my weekday morning java jolt. And in another bit of mindless engineering, espresso machines use the drip tray to collect water and steam released from the boiler, meaning that after making my coffee, I also have to clean up the accumulated water in the tray. Senseo solves this problem far more intelligently by recycling the excess water and steam back into the water reservoir. From start to finish, the Perfect Pod option is also messy and more time-consuming to prepare pods than the espresso machines are to load and pack the holder. This cumbersome-ness can be reduced by mass-production of 6-8 pods at a time, after which the ease of using the Senseo far outweighs the espresso machine. Also by packing each filter with 2 scoops of coffee so that you only need to use one large pod to make a 2-cup serving, you can reduce the number of pods you need to make, and the number of filters you need to buy. I make these pods while watching evening news, so I am not really having to spend precious extra time to prepare them.Have been using Perfect Pod since December 2008 and have made hundreds of pods with it since then. For further details on how I've made it easier to use, see my review of this unit at http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZZI963V6JMO/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B000XDBBO8&nodeID=&tag=&linkCode=

Buy this if you love your Senseo!!

*by C***S on Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2012*

Finally a convenient, reliable and easy way to use my own freshly ground coffee beans in my beloved Senseo! This little device works PERFECTLY... yes... PERFECTLY! Also, a little tip... if you want the trademark Senseo 'foam' on the top of the coffee, when using the coffee duck, put a round 3.5 inch disc style paper filter under the plastic lid directly on top of the coffee. That will result in perfect foam, just like the old pods used to give. The foam is a result of aeration and the filter paper is necessary for good aeration. I use two filter papers together under the plastic disc and the result is excellent. Also... and this is important - I use a small inexpensive Mr. Coffee brand bean grinder and grind the beans until very fine. It is important to grind the beans till very FINE. Or use espresso grind if you do it at the supermarket in their machine. The grind is important for full flavored coffee. Now, I can use whatever coffee I want to use... FREEDOM from pods forever!!!!
