Or maybe this music sounded better when I was younger
Disappointing as the production value seems a bit thin. Or maybe this music sounded better when I was younger when it first came out. Also disappointing as there is more Supremes on their own than there is Diana Ross & the Supremes.

Good value
A good lp, excellent condition. All I would say is check any CD, LP or DVD upon receipt. The one I ordered was in excellent condition and played perfectly.

SUPREME STEREO MIXES
A word of warning, the clever people at amazon.co.uk have the policy of grouping reviews for similar sounding CD's, even if they are TOTALLY DIFFERENT, so as there are several Supremes' Anthologies, I fear my review will end up in places where it does not belong. This review is only for "Diana Ross & The Supremes Anthology" amazon's code = ASIN: B00005T7WF , black background to front cover with the Supremes on, note microphone is on the left, the CD was issued in 2001 and has 26 tracks on CD1 and 24 tracks on CD2, Amazon.co.uk claim 23 tracks on CD2. SOME OTHER ISSUES ARE MONO, SOME HAVE LESS TRACKS, ALL HAVE DIFFERENT COVERS, ALTHOUGH ONE IS A MIRROR IMAGE OF THIS SO MICROPHONE ON THE RIGHT.Phew, now that's over let's deal with the music and its sound quality. You get all the hits up to 1970 when Diana Ross left, plus lots more, including what I class as rarities and all tracks are in stereo except tracks 2,3,4 and 25 on CD1, perhaps no stereo masters remain. Sound quality is good to very good, taking into account the tracks are up to 50 years old and better than most other issues I have tried. Some treats for me are, "He" in stereo for the first time ever, "It Makes No Difference Now", "Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered", "If A Girl Isn't Pretty" and "The Impossible Dream". Great that the chart hits are, but you can appreciate the group's versatility with songs like these, some were done live, no studio special effects, just great voices, a real delight, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED,WORTH 4.5 STARS, CAN BE FOUND FOR SALE AS A USED ITEM ON AMAZON.COMAlternatives, see "Gold",includes post 1970 tracks, "No 1's" the USA version Amazon's code = ASIN: B0000DD575, "The Greatest Diana Ross & The Supremes" these last two also include Diana Ross solo after she left the Supremes in 1970.These three alternatives are also stereo and of similar sound quality, IF YOU SEARCH YOU WILL FIND MP3 SAMPLES TO LISTEN TO AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELF.

Supreme introduction
There are many Supremes compilations on the market - most of them hybrids or varients of the first major Anthology released by Motown as a three-album gatefold compilation in 1974. This album, which is quite hard to come by in the stores in Europe, is interesting for both collectors and as an overall introduction to the Diana Ross & the Supremes legacy. For collectors it has some interesting show tunes from the Hollywood Palace and their TV specials with the Temptations which can't be found easily elsewhere. For the more general record buying public it offers a good overall study of their career from 1963 until the 1970s including their string of No 1 hits, a wide variety of other songs from the 'No Hits Supremes' days to offerings from their many concept albums as well as some rare outtakes. Overall the double album shows just how versatile the three girls were and admirably demonstrates why they were the gretest female girl group of all time - truly Supreme Dreamgirls!

Five Stars for Fans - 3.5 for the Casual Listener
This is really a great collection of the Supremes 1960s output. It is perhaps a bit heavy on the pre-million selling songs, but very complete overall. It is quite an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable journey listening to how the group's sound matures as you make it through to their last single "Someday We'll Be Together." There are several rarities on both discs to make devoted fans, like myself, jump for joy.My only real beef is that the remastering is not up to the high standard. Most of the tracks sound as if they were run through a highly compressed FM radio signal. This is a surprise considering the great sound quality of the Supremes box set released in 2000. In spite of this, for us devoted fans, it is darn close to heaven. Now, how about a two-disc anthology of the post-Diana Ross (1970-1977) Supremes???

Listenable with a few welcome extras
For listening pleasure, this set is more satisfying than the 40th Anniversary Box set, since I found the alternate versions of some of their hits rather uninteresting. Also, these cuts sound closer to what might have been original mixes...no extra reverb. The voices are more exposed, less adorned, and somehow, all the more impressive. Mary & Flo's extra choruses at the end of "Itching In My Heart" without Diana's ad-libs are almost like finding a long lost friend. The extra backing vocals at the end of "You Keep Me Hangin On" are dynamic, but are sacrificed in the rest of this odd mix. Why not use the version from the Motown Story? The best one around, in my opinion. When first announced, this set was said to include "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." I've heard a rough mix of that cover, and would have preferred it to "Nitty Gritty," which completely unSupreme, and not a good match for Ross' vocal style. One day, Motown may quit teasing us and deliver a package that really showcases the scope of the group. Meanwhile, I await the Supremes 70's Anthology.
