Morton Feldman: Violin and Orchestra

ECM is such a brilliant record company, and this is an example of the super high standards they bring to even their most esoteric output. I have come to Morton Feldman's music through them.

Feldman seems to have been really well served by record companies over the last 20 years and this is no exception, with ECM (a perfect match for Feldman's Music) producing a great recording with a beautifully judged performance. The music itself is fragmentary with short units,in the style of the 2nd String Quartet but without the later chamber music's natural unity of sound. The large orchestral forces are utilized as shifting groups of chamber players with the violin almost being the only constant throughout the piece. Anyone who's heard (?) Feldman's "The King of Denmark" won't be surprised that the four percussionists have not brought my roof tiles down yet.
