The book gives an introduction to the language, then goes on to show you key aspects of successful modeling, and many different patterns for its use. From Business to Infrastructure, from Risk & Security to Application Exploitation and Maintenance. While the aim of the book is to teach the language, it often also offers necessary background, so that the patterns can make sense to the reader not familiar with a subject. Thus, it also contains introductions to subjects such as virtualization, bitcoin/blockchain, infrastructure as code, processes versus functions, SOA/API, ESB, Terminal Services, etc. It also contains a short introduction to BPMN in order to describe a linking of both major languages. Gerben Wierda (1961) is author of Chess and the Art of Enterprise Architecture, and is Team Coordinator Architecture & Design at APG, one of the largest Fiduciary Managers in the world. When I initially discovered the Archimate modelling language, I was looking for resource that could explain not only the syntax but how to use it effectively and practically. Having bought Mastering Archimate, I've found this book indispensable. The author explains the syntax effectively in the first part; but what I've found most valuable are the patterns which he has created, I can now effectively take these and use them as sort of "templates component" to apply them to my architectures (for example, from modelling database nodes to modelling excel applications). The advanced topics are also very helpful, and I've found that I've been able to pick and choose which particular topics within the advanced subjects I'd like to use to help speed up applying the language to my specific situations. In addition, the author has been exceptional at responding to questions that I've sent. All in all, I've found the book to be well written and very thorough, and almost every architectural scenario/situation where I'd like to apply the language has been covered. I expect that this book is not only great for beginners in Archimate, but will also serve as an excellent reference for more experienced modellers. I've been using this for the last week on a complex project and found it extremely helpful! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent book with practical real world examples *by B***A on 6 April 2020* This book is great for learning Archimate notation. It does not stop at teaching the notation like other UML books. It has numerous architecture diagrams taken from real world scenarios. It also shows alternative architectures of systems and the pros and cons; and when to use which. Many of the concepts that were a bit 'blurry' to me and some of my doubts were cleared after reading this. I was having trouble deciding what is the best way to design/draw solutions for certain scenarios where more than one way was possible. This book helped me to get clarity on those issues.
