Cloisonne is an ancient multistep enamel process that was first developed in the near East, and spread from there to Byzantium. The technique envolves taking a metal base, onto which is transfered a design. Filigree partitions, or Cloisons, which acr as colour separators are then cut to size and attached to the item, or bead with soldering paste. By firing the item in an oven, the cloisons are affixed to it. Powdered glass in a water based paste, known as frit is then applied within the partitions. Once this has dried, the item is fired again, and the glass is melted onto the metal. This process may be repeated, both in order to build up the depth of coating and to achieve the desired artistic effect. This is an attractive and stylish rosary of genuine Cloisonne beads in a striking traditional multifloral design set against a pink background. The 8mm beads are enhanced with a neat traditional crucifix and Our Lady junction. The Rosary has a decade length of about 25", with a drop including Crucifix of 7".
