The reason for that explicit mention is that the newer controllers are hybrid IR and wireless ... the TV turns on (by default) with an IR signal from the the newer remotes, but then works via wireless after that, so that you don't need direct line of sight. This remote is IR all the way, so you always need line-of-sight between your tv and remote.That said, works fine, and once your tv is turned on (via this remote), you can use an android phone with the Roku app as a controller if the line-of-sight thing bugs you.You can also turn on the TV manually, of course, using the power button located behind the nub at the bottom center of your TV, then use the Roku app from there. But that would require rising from the couch like some sort of 20th century savage, so kind-of a non-starter.Oh yeah, there's also a setting buried someplace in the TV menus (power settings, maybe?) that makes the TV more responsive to wi-fi, at the expense of more energy used. Keeps it from going into as deep a sleep when turned off, so that the Roku app can wake it by itself, without IR. I'll update this with the exact menu path if I remember, but it's not hard to find if you poke around. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good remote - work! *by A***A on Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2020* Got this for my new 75” TCL 4K tv that’s Roku built in, as the tiny slippery dark little remotes constantly get lost so dang easily - I ordered this as a backup for one of the inevitable times can’t find the remote. I actually like this remote far better than the one that came with the tv!!!! First off, the quick buttons in the bottom are right up my alley, as they differ than the ones I got on my remote. Also the volume buttons aren’t as skippy as the original remote, and the buttons are just smoother. Needless to say, this became my daily remote and the old became the backup. No voice recognition on this , so I left that rating blank.*Also good to note* you don’t have to do anything to connect the remote to the tv/roku (like with a universal remote or even the fire stick remote have to press a couple buttons to get it connecting and working).There are also sleeves you can purchase on here that glow in the dark, protect or make it larger and with grip so it’s not so easily lost. I’d suggest it to anyone- can find cheap ones and it was the best few dollars I ever spent!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works Well But For How Long? *by L***W on Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019* At first I thought these remotes were identical to the ones that came with my televisions but there is a difference in the quality of the buttons that you toggle to move up, down, left and right. In other words, the big square in the center of the remote seems to be rather loose and not solid like the original remote. Just slightly touching or tapping ( not pressing) the buttons in the center makes a tinny sound as if the connections are cheap and will break soon. Otherwise, the remotes work fine ( for now). In the future though if and when I need to replace these, I will order directly from the manufacturer and frankly, that is what I would recommend to anyone else.
