One for My Enemy: A Novel

Dark and Intriguing
This was a very twisted dark and intriguing story that connects everyone and is a twisted tale of love. Koeoshi and Baba Yaga really messed up the lives of their children for power and the way two of those children on each side found love and eventually fought to end them was intriguing. It was like a darker version of Romeo and Juliet except with magic and it was kinda like they were mafia.

an incredible twist on a beloved story
a romeo and juliet retelling with magic, set in modern day nyc? sign me up.i personally loved the twist on the book and the way it was organized into acts and scenes, like a play. i do admit i disliked the earlier death scenes bc i feel it diluted the story. i do enjoy the revenge plots, i feel it moved a bit slow tbh. but that ending of sacrifice for their siblings was,,,, incredible. solid 4 stars

interesting
An atmospheric and witchy retelling of Romeo & Juliet in a richly evoked New York. Much more concerned with vibes than plot.

Sumptuous
I hate that word, but I feel like it’s the best one to describe this book. I love the way it’s written, amazing characters. A new favorite!

Tears
So...I cried. I got a bit bored in the middle. Which is uncommon, but might also have been because I was ill. I'll definitely pick this one up for a reread. Because I did enjoy it.

One of my favorites!
I've been a fan of Olivie's for a long time, and she absolutely nailed it with this book! I read the whole thing in a single day because it was just impossible to look away from the well-paced plot, unique setting, and fantastic characterization. One of my favorite parts of this novel was the depiction of the family dynamics within both the Fedorovs and the Antonovas. I thought that the relationships between Marya Antonova and her sisters were especially well-written and that Marya's character as a whole was heartbreakingly real. As the oldest in my family, I really understood Marya's desire to protect her sisters at all costs, even that of her own happiness. I particularly loved the bond between Marya and Sasha, especially the way that she tried to give Sasha everything she couldn't have herself. Overall, the characters in this story are so well-written that I empathized with all of them at some point in the story, even the apparent villain.I loved how the author combined traditional Russian folklore with magic in a modern-day NYC to create a truly enthralling setting. The world-building in this story is simply magnificent. The magic was described in such a way that always kept me guessing as to what would happen next, and I was truly surprised by several of the plot events. The author sets the story up for the reader to discover some things before the characters, and it creates the best emotional resolution when the characters finally figure things out. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about big families, urban fantasy with a dash of the paranormal, ill-advised romances, and criminal dynasties.I'll definitely be reading the rest of her published works now!

READ. THIS. BOOK.
When I first read snippets and ideas from this book that Olivie shared on her blog, I was already intrigued. To say that I was excited for this book is an understatement? I was so happy when I finally got it and the wait was totally worth it!One of the things I love about this book is how masterful Olivie is in crafting the sibling dynamics between the Antonova Sisters and the Federov Brothers. I have no idea if she herself has siblings but as for myself, I have a bunch of younger ones and lemme tell ya... That scene with Sasha’s sisters barging into her room? I felt that. As I read the story, I felt like I was going through the same emotions as they were and it made me wonder if I would react the same way.I absolutely adore Marya Antonova. She has a special place in my heart now. Her loyalty to her family, even until the very end left such a huge impression on me. Her eldest sister vibes really resonated with me cause I’m the eldest in my family as well. Also, her fondness and overprotectiveness towards Sasha and wanting to give her and Lev what she and Dima never got just really hit home for me. I can only wish I’d be half as strong as her if my family ever finds itself in some dire situation that will require Sacrifices™️.I don’t know it it’s just me but the way Olivie wrote this book is so poetic? I was swooning all over certain passages and I had to pause and re-read them because of how beautiful they were??? She’s so talented in making you care about these characters and getting you invested in their story. I truly didn’t know what would happen until the very end. The way she wove their stories together and the dialogue, my goodness, the dialogue- it was absolutely perfect. If Shakespeare was alive and got to read this, he’d be flattered at the homage to Romeo and Juliet tbh.So if you enjoyed reading Lovely Tangled Vices, you should give this a chance. Actually, if you love reading any of Olivie’s works or if you’re encountering her for the first time, you should definitely get this book.

Inteligente, linguagem linda, história maluca que a autora com seu talento faz fazer sentido.Uma raridade no meio de tantos livros iguais que sao lançados aos montes todo ano.Esse é diferente, esse é único.

such a good book!
one for my enemy tells the story of two rival families that have control over the criminal activity in new york city. the antonova family, headed by baba yaga are a group of beautiful, ruthless witches, each with specific powers. meanwhile koschei the deathless is the patriarch of the fedorov family, he and his three sons take care of the extortions in the community of new york. after a little more than a decade of pseudo-peace between the families, a conflict arises, and it brings back struggles of the past and changes the path of the antonovas and the fedorovs. this book was the second instalment of olivie blake that I have read. after reading the atlas six, I was excited to dive into another of blake’s books. one for my enemy didn’t disappoint at all. The combination of the legend of koschei the deathless and romeo and juliet was fascinating from finish to end. the book is written like a play, with a list of the characters (the cast) at the start, interludes and the chapters being separated as scenes, a clear easter egg to the play which the book was inspired in.the story and the characters of one for my enemy were captivating from the start. the story is quick-paced and intriguing, it’s full of plot-twists, you never know what to expect next. the romance in this book was one of my favourite parts from the story. lev and sasha’s dynamic was refreshing and fun, completely different from the other couple. marya and dimitri, who were passionate and tragic. the sibling relationship in the book is also one of the strongest points from the plot. marya and sasha’s relationship is heartwarming and the fedorov brothers, dimitri, lev and roma, who struggle with their loyalty to each other, and their father, is heart wrenching.the only thing i would change from one for my enemy is the lack of appearance of the other four antonova sisters, while they do appear, I would have liked to see more of them and their relationship with each other and sasha and marya. despite that, blake wrote an amazing book that hooks you in from start to finish, i couldn’t seem to put the book down. the magic elements, the plot, the characters and the layout of the book created an amazing book in a short standalone. easily one of my favourite reads of 2021.

Good book, came a bit dirty
Love the hardcover’s design and the book was good (but not for me). The dust cover did cove a tiny bit dirty near the spine of the back side but I did manage to get rid of it
