Just the job for indoor plants.
Just a thin covering with this stuff and my plants look better. Plus, the insects have gone. I know this is supposed to be for aquariums, but it's also great for plant pots. It was recommended by somebody on a horticulture site.

Not all 4-6mm
Perhaps I'm just being picky, but I bought this on the advertisement that it was 4-6mm stones. Imagine my surprise when the sack turned up with a large number of less than 4mm stones in it. Oh, some were certainly in the size range advertised, but not all of them - which I did expect. I mean, it's not that difficult to use a sieve graded to scale to sort things like this. Smaller debris falls through, and the larger stones stay put. So, with modern manufacturing and packaging methods I figured this would be okay. Or perhaps not.Thankfully we had enough larger stones from a different purchase to cover this product. We didn't have the time to order something different or mess about emailing the company as moving house and fish in a bucket preclude time to spare. So, we washed the stones, poured them into the tank and used the other bag to cover them. We don't have the base cover we wanted, but it's acceptable as is for now.I suppose in regards to this, one should always remember "caveat emptor" - buyer beware. As what you get might not be what you expect and events collude to leave you stuck with it. Now, to be fair, the product photograph does show smaller stones in the mix, and I should have paid more attention to that. But when buying a large bag, one does not honestly expect the 'majority' of it's contents to be below the stated size.Regardless, the delivery was quick, I felt very sorry for the delivery chap who had to lug this up our pathway as it was pretty heavy. The stones look attractive in the bottom of the tank and look very natural there unlike some of the rather lurid stones I've seen in the store. They are also doing the job we expect of them, filter dirt down to the base of the tank where it can compost and feed the plants we have in various places. At the end of the day, job done. The reason for wanting larger stones is because the fish had a habit of sucking the stones in the old tank. Presumably to get at the algae or something, I don't honestly know. But the stones would frequently get stuck in their mouths, resulting in urgent and immediate triage to get the thing out without harming the fish. I deliberately ordered larger stones to prevent a recurrence of this. I'm just pleased that we were fortunate enough to have half a bag from a different project and that was enough as a layer on top. Suffice to say the tank looks good, the fish are happy, the shrimp are happy, my wife and daughter are happy. Nuff said.
