The Glenn Miller Band star in this wartime musical as a struggling swing band called The Dartmouth Troubadors. The band is about to get a big break by playing at an exclusive ski resort called Sun Valley, when the romance between the piano player, Ted, and the singer, Vivienne, is rocked by a publicity stunt. The band adopts a wartime refugee who turns out to be a gorgeous blonde Norwegian looking for an American husband. The film features the superb dancing of the Nicholas Brothers and famous songs such as 'Chattanooga Choo-Choo', 'I Know Why' and 'So Do You'. Review: Ideal if you like Glen Miller. - Nothing to know it's an absolutely brilliant film very entertaining, music us great. Review: Sonja Henie's very best film. - Sun Valley Serenade (1941) is the story of a young refugee from Norway, played by Sonja Henie, who sets her sights on her sponser, played by John Payne. In spite of the fact he has a fiancee, she is undaunted and lies, stalkes and manipulates herself into his life. To be fair, the story is not important, but is the framework to showcase Sonja Henie's skating talents. Glenn Miller and his orchestra add to the enjoyment with such great standards as I Know Why, In The Mood and Chattanooga Choo-Choo which features the talents of Dorothy Dandridge and the Nichola Brothers. The very funny Joan Davis makes three brief appearances. Milton Berle and Lynn Bari have important supporting roles. There is a theatrical trailer which shows a quick shot of a Joan Davis musical number which was deleted from the original release. The skating finale is one of Sonja Henie's best skating routines. The ice was covered in black ink to give the effect of skating on a mirrored surface. It's stunning to watch. The black and white print quality is very good to excellent.

Movie: 5 stars DVD: 1 star
This movie is delightful and I have owned it on VHS for many years. This title is not available on DVD in the U.S. which is where I live. I have other Region 2 DVDs which play just fine on my Mac using VLC software. This DVD would not play at all on VLC, and so I simply gave the DVD to a friend (a Glenn Miller fan like myself) who owns a Region free DVD player. I am out the price and the shipping, but at least a friend can enjoy the DVD. I greatly lament the fact that it would not play on my computer - using VLC - it's strange since other Acorn Media/BBC titles in Region 2 do play with no problems at all. The music (Glenn Miller and friends) and the skating (Henie) are excellent and entertaining, so I highly recommend this title to any of you who have equipment which will reliably play region two discs.

Just magical!
This is one of my all time favourite films! The perfect show case for Miller's Orchestra with Sonja Henie and John Payne acting their roles wonderfully. Great support roles too from Milton Berle and Lynn Bari (who also appeared in Miller's only other film, Orchestra Wives). The film includes a great dance routine by the Nicholas Brothers (who were also in Orchestra Wives), with a young Dorothy Dandridge who charmingly sings with them in Chatanoogoo Choo Choo. My only regret is that we are unable to see the final skating routine in colour as it must have been beautiful. My top tip - look out for Sonja Henie's amazing spins, you won't believe that someone could go that fast!

Skating in Swingtime
This is the first of only two Glenn Miller films (the other one being "Orchestra Wives") and as a result probably suffers from the studios reluctance to allow the Miller band to carry the film alone, without the "added attraction" of olympic skater, Sonia Henie. Despite the oil and water mix the resuling film is probably better than you might expect. Henie gives an engagingly naive performance in a simple story line, with some wonderful skating pyrotechnics thrown in for good measure, while the Miller band sequences are just about as good as it gets. The band started work on the picture on 24th March 1941 and finished on 3rd of May. Personel was unchanged from the previous November and this shows in the performance. The "togetherness" is breathtaking. Many of the sidemen would go on to form their own bands later, (Billy May; Ray Anthony; Tex Beneke; Hal McIntyre), or move into the "studios" when the big bands lost their appeal and the singers took over in the late forties early fifties. It has been said that Glenn Miller never hired a "dud" musician and his work for the Fox Studios in 1941 and 1942 certainly prove this point.

Pure magic.
If, like me, you are nostalgic for a period you never actually lived through, this is for you. The Glen Miller band was on top form, and the dance routines were excellent. The story was a bit daft, but who cares?

Sun Valley Serenade Blu-ray Spanish Version
This Spanish Blu-ray is of reasonable quality for a seventy year old film. Most annoying it has yellow Spanish Sub titles that I was unable to remove. No extras. Appears to be on a recordable disc which has been printed on. Great film which I enjoyed ....good way to learn Spannish!!

Glenn Miller Fan appreciates this archive material.
ve been a lifelong Glenn Miller Fan, but did not know about George Simon. This was a Great find! Sun Valley Serenade was a great find and a good laugh with lovely pictures of the original bands in the early 1940s. Orchestra Wives contains great music, but I gather the story is fictitional and misleading....... Nevertheless these films were worth buying - but I could not download extracts for fear of breaking the law!!!! Thank you for making these available David Walker aged 80 in 1940 was a Refugee in convoy of 0 ships - 3 of which got sunk..... My book "Through and Beyond Together" (Xulon Press) tells some of this story.

Sun valley serenade
