Riddled with factual errors
As some other reviews have already stated, the author clearly forgot whether he is writing fact or fiction. Although he has some very good source material, what he needed was some assistance from someone who knows about military details and etiquette, in fact from the first page I am afraid that he shows his complete lack of military knowledge and research, all of which could have been checked as the information is out there. A couple of examples are that that the Cadillac in the Middle East is described as Armoured, it never was, Ike's train was never just two carriages, two carriages still exist in the USA, but the train was a lot bigger, and the errors just go on, the factual errors are huge and there is no excuse for this nowadays. If you know nothing of the real story then this is reasonable fiction, if you want a better idea of the story, find a second hand copy of Kay Summersby's book "The Past Forgetting," or find the DVD for the 1978 miniseries "IKE" based on this book, starring Robert Duval in an unusually sensitive role as Ike, and the superlative Lee Remick as Kay, this will give you a much better idea of what happened.A book that with more work and research could have been much better. Sadly, avoid this book.

Entertaining if not entirely accurate
I am glad I read this book as it opened up the second world war in a new and powerful way. The references to telegraph cottage really annoyed me though: it's not in Richmond park but I'm a private road half a mile away so all those sections were fanciful. Admittedly there is a golf course adjacent to the park but there are two closer to telegraph cottage which I presume he would have played at. My problem is if the author took liberties with this level of basic information how much more can we believe? Yes I know it's a novel and there are conflicting accounts of the relationship but if rather my historical novel were entirely convincing. Having said that I found the end particularly moving and believable.

Excellent book.
Excellent book. Reads more like a biography of Eisenhower than a novel. One big mistake: says Patton was in comand in Phillipines in WW2 instead of MacArthur!

Compelling reading
I did not know anything about this so called friendship/ relationship and found it interesting but sad. Men will be men!

An enjoyable read even though the book is a combination of historical facts and some guesswork on the part of the novelist.
